Design and properties of polyarylene ether nitrile copolymers with improved elongation at break

Polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) based on biphenol exhibits a high glass transition temperature of 216 degrees C, a high tensile strength of 110 MPa, and low elongation at break of approximately 4%. A series of PEN random copolymers with improved elongation at break were synthesized using various bisphenol compounds and 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (DCBN). The resulting PEN random copolymers exhibited a high glass transition temperature and thermal stability up to 513 degrees C in a nitrogen atmosphere. PEN copolymers were amorphous and could easily be cast into transparent films with a tensile strength of 97.93-117.88 MPa and tensile modulus of 2187.98-2558.44 MPa. Most importantly, elongation at break of these PEN copolymers was higher than 13%. PEN copolymer films had a dielectric constant of 3.77-3.89 at 1 kHz and extremely low dielectric loss (<0.02). At the same time, the breakdown strength of PEN was in the range of 137.92-198.19 kV/mm and energy storage density was in the range of 0.32-0.68 J/cm(3). A Comprehensive Study about the Role of Crosslink Density on the Tribological Behavior of DLC Coated Rubber

The friction and wear behavior of coated rubber components is strongly dependent on the substrate properties. This work deals with the impact of the crosslink density, i.e., the hardness of the rubber substrate on the tribological performance of uncoated and coated rubber. The hardness of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) is varied altering the sulfur content. Both the uncoated and coated rubber samples are characterized in terms of surface and mechanical properties. Tribological tests comprise the examination of the macroscopic contact area and the temperature in the contact zone. It was found that the functional layer enhances the wear resistance significantly. Apparently, the wear and friction behavior of the coated rubber correlates with the hardness and the bulk properties of the substrate material.

Microwave-induced free radicals production in red wine and model wine by electron paramagnetic resonance spin trapping

Microwave can directly induce the production of 1-hydroxyethyl free radical in red wine and model wine. Free radicals are considered as key intermediates in the wine aging processing by microwave, but their properties have not been determined. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping with 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolin N-oxide (DMPO) was used to detect the type of free radicals. After microwave irradiation, spin adducts of hydroxyl free radical were detected in DMPO solution, whereas 1-hydroxyethyl free radical spin adducts were captured in red wine and model wine, because 1-hydroxyethyl free radicals arose from the oxidation of ethanol by hydroxyl free radical in red wine induced by microwave irradiation. Compared with the processing of natural oxidation, the intensity of free radicals induced by microwave in red wine became more strong, and the effects of microwave temperature, time, and power on the intensity of 1-hydroxyethyl free radical spin adducts in model wines were also studied. The intensity of free radical spin adducts increased with the increasing of microwave power and time. The intensity of DMPO/1-hydroxyethyl free radical spin adducts increases at low temperature, but decreased at higher temperatures. Practical applications This study investigated the existence of free radical in the processing of wine aging, and the possible mechanism of microwave irradiation accelerated aging of red wine was studied with model wine. Results revealed that the intensity of 1-hydroxyethyl free radical induced by microwave in red wine and model wine. Therefore, microwave irradiation was considered to be a promising aging technology, so microwave radiation technology can be used in many aging products that sped up the aging processing.

Synthetic Processes toward Nitriles without the Use of Cyanide: A Biocatalytic Concept Based on Dehydration of Aldoximes in Water

While belonging to the most fundamental functional groups, nitriles represent a class of compound that still raises challenges in terms of an efficient, cost-effective, general and, at the same time, sustainable way for their synthesis. Complementing existing chemical routes, recently a cyanide-free enzymatic process technology based on the use of an aldoxime dehydratase (Oxd) as a biocatalyst component has been developed and successfully applied for the synthesis of a range of nitrile products. In these biotransformations, the Oxd enzymes catalyze the dehydration of aldoximes as readily available substrates to the nitrile products. Herein, these developments with such enzymes are summarized, with a strong focus on synthetic applications. It is demonstrated that this biocatalytic technology has the potential to cross the bridge between the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, on one hand, and bulk and commodity chemicals, on the other.

The optical control of anisotropy in materials is highly advantageous for many technological applications, including the real-time modulation of another light signal in photonic switches and sensors. Here, we introduce three thiophene derivatives with a donor-acceptor structure, which feature different positions of an electron-acceptor nitrile group, and both photoalignment and luminescence properties. Quantum chemical calculations highlight the presence of trans-forms stable at room temperature and metastable cis-isomers. Besides photoluminescence peaked at 440460 nm and 0.4 ns lifetime, the three nonlinear optical chromophores exhibit photoinduced anisotropy of the refractive index closely depending on the specific molecular structure, with higher values of birefringence at lower driving signal being obtained for ortho substitution of the nitrile group. All-optical modulation of an external light beam at rates of hundreds of hertz is demonstrated in the fluorescent systems. This finding opens an interesting route to multispectral photonic switches embedded in the active layers of light-emitting devices.

The vibrational group frequency of the N-O-center dot stretching band of nitroxide stable free radicals

The group frequency of the N-O radical stretching vibration has received scant attention in the literature. The few existing treatments of the vibrational spectroscopy of nitroxides are incomplete at best and potentially misleading to workers in the field. To close this gap in the available knowledge, the existing literature on the vibrational spectra of nitroxide stable free radicals is critically reviewed with particular reference to the wavenumber position of the N-O-center dot stretching vibration, nu(N-O-center dot). Poor evidentiary bases for the assignment nu(N-O-center dot) were found in many instances. Ab initio Density Field Theory calculations using a model chemistry of UB3LYP at the 6-311 ++G(d,p) level were performed to obtain a theoretical band position of nu(N-O-center dot) for comparison with the published data. Large discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental values were found for the radical 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-yloxyl, which currently sets the lower limit of the accepted wavenumber range of nu(N-O-center dot), as well as for the nitronyl and iminyl nitroxides. The wavenumber position of nu(N-O-center dot) was found to occur in the range 1450-1420cm(-1) for 5-membered cyclic nitroxides and 1395-1340 cm(-1) for 6-membered cyclic and acyclic nitroxides. In nitronyl nitroxides, the symmetric stretching vibration occurs in the region 1470cm(-1), but coupling to other modes makes specific band assignments problematic for the nitronyl nitroxide group.
