Electroless Deposition of Ni-P Coatings on HNBR for Low Friction Rubber Seals

This paper reports a simple and cost-effective procedure to coat hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) with a well-adherent Ni-P film by using the electroless plating method. A HNBR surface functionalization process was first optimized, creating an interpenetrating network with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Silver nanoparticles were deposited on PVP and acted as catalysts for the Ni-P film deposition, eliminating the expensive tin-palladium sensitization/activation step. A homogeneous, low phosphorous Ni-P film was obtained after 60-120 min of plating in an alkaline bath, with an average thickness of 3 to 10 mu m, respectively. The PVP internetwork played an important role on the strong adhesion of the film, 1.0 +/- 0.5 MPa. The tribological behavior of Ni-P-plated HNBR samples was studied for 1, 5 and 10 N applied loads under dry sliding on a pin-on-disc configuration and the coefficient of friction (CoF) was reduced by similar to 30-49%, compared to uncoated HNBR (loads 1-5N). Based on these results, Ni-P-coated rubber can be regarded as a novel solution for enhancement of the tribological behavior of dynamic seals; it can be regarded as a means to avoid machinery failure. This method offers an alternative to the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings.

Synthesis and characterization of a crosslinked membrane based on sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) and sulfonated polyvinyl alcohol applied in direct methanol fuel cells

Vinyl-terminated sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone) (VSPAES) and sulfonated polyvinyl alcohol containing vinyl group (VSPVA) have been prepared. The VSPVA and VSPAES were crosslinked by adding AIBN as initiator. The results of FT-IR and H-1-NMR indicated the existence of sulfonic acid groups and crosslinked structure in these crosslinked membranes. The microphase structures of the membranes are analyzed by SEM. The proton conductivities of membranes were above 10 mS cm(-1), which indicated that it basically meet the needs of fuel cells. The methanol permeability coefficients of CSPAES membrane is 2.8×10(-7) cm(2) s(-1), remarkably lower than neat SPAES (8.5×10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)) and Nafion117 (14.1×10(-7) cm(2) s(-1)). Moreover, the proton selecticity of CSPAES membrane is close to 2 times higher than that of Nafion 117 membrane. The crosslinked membrane showed better stability than the linear SPAES membrane.

EPR spectroscopy detection of active oxygen and free radicals in thylakoids exposed to photoinhibition

High intensity illumination of thylakoids results in the well-characterized impairment of Photosystem Il electron transport (photoinhibition), followed by the degradation of the D1 reaction centre protein. The time course and features of photodamage are different in fully functional thylakoid membranes, when photoinhibition is invoked by impairment of Photosystem II acceptor side electron transport, and in thylakoids which are unable to oxidize water, when the damage is a consequence of inactivation of Photosystem II donor side. In the present study we followed the production of singlet oxygen and free radicals during both types of photoinhibition by EPR spectroscopy. Singlet oxygen was detected by following the formation of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl, a stable nitroxide radical yielded in the reaction of singlet oxygen with the sterically hindered amine 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine. Free radicals were detected as spin adducts of the spin trap 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrrolin-N-oxide, and identified on the basis of hyperfine splitting constants of the EPR spectre. We found that (i) singlet oxygen, a non-radical form of active oxygen was detectable only in samples undergoing acceptor side induced photodamage. (ii) The acceptor side induced process was accompanied by the oxygen dependent production of carbon centred (alkyl or hydroxyalkyl) radicals, probably from the reaction of singlet oxygen with histidine residues. (iii) Donor side induced photoinhibition was dominated by hydroxyl radicals, which were produced in anaerobic samples, too. The production rate of these radicals, as well as D1 protein degradation, was dependent on the possibility of electron donation From manganese ions to Photosystem II. The marked distinction between the active oxygen forms produced in acceptor and donor side induced photoinhibition are in agreement with earlier reports on the different mechanism of these processes.

Concise Synthesis of 3-(Aminomethyl)pyrrolizidines via an In(OTf)(3)-Mediated Ring Rearrangement of 2-[2-(1-Pyrrolin-2-yl)alkyl]aziridines

In this study, an efficient ring rearrangement of 2-[2-(1-pyrrolin-2-yl)alkyl]aziridines, prepared from 2-(bromomethyl) aziridines, toward novel trans-and cis-3-aminomethyl-substituted pyrrolizidines was developed. To that end, addition of In(OTf)(3) as an appropriate Lewis acid catalyst resulted in the formation of intermediate pyrrolizidinium salts via regioselective aziridine ring opening, which were then trapped by a hydride or cyanide nucleophile. Column chromatographic purification allowed the isolation of the major trans-isomers, exclusively.

Characterization of Dielectric Relaxation Process by Impedance Spectroscopy for Polymers: Nitrile Butadiene Rubber and Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer

We invented a dispersion analysis program that analyzes the relaxation processes from dielectric permittivity based on a combination of the Havriliak-Negami and conductivity contribution functions. By applying the created program to polymers such as nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), several relaxation processes were characterized: an alpha process due to segmental motions of the C-C bond, an alpha ‘ process attributed to fluctuations in the end-to-end dipole vector of the polymer chain, the conduction contribution by the filler observed above room temperature, and secondary relaxation processes beta and gamma of motion for the side group in NBR. In the EPDM specimen, the beta process associated with the rotational motion of the side groups, the alpha process associated with the relaxation of local segmental motion, and the alpha beta process associated with the origin of the beta process at high temperatures above 305 K were observed. The Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars effect and conduction contribution were also presented. The molecular chains responsible for the relaxation processes were assigned by building molecular models of the two polymers. The temperature dependence of the relaxation strength and the shape parameters that characterize the process were investigated. From the temperature-dependent relaxation analysis, the merged alpha beta process, activation energy, and glass transition temperature were determined and compared.

Simultaneous enhancement of dielectric and mechanical properties ofhigh-density polyethylene/nitrile rubber/multiwalled carbon nanotubecomposites prepared by dynamic vulcanization

Polymer dielectric composites, which possess high dielectric and loss suppression with excellent mechanical properties, are of crucial importance in practical applications. Herein, high-density polyethylene/nitrile rubber/multiwalled carbon nanotube (HDPE/NBR/MWCNT) composites were fabricated by the dynamic vulcanization (DV) technique. The effect of DV on the structure and properties of HDPE/NBR/MWCNTs was systematically investigated. The results illustrate that the DV technique combines the advantages of the crosslinked phase and melt processability of thermoplastics. With the increase of dicumyl peroxide content, the dielectric permittivity and the mechanical properties clearly increase, due to a better compatibility and dispersibility achieved by DV. More importantly, a continuous decrease of dielectric loss and conductivity are observed with the increase of dicumyl peroxide content. These can probably be assigned to the combination of better dispersion and slower chain mobility of the NBR phase induced by crosslinking. (c) 2020 Society of Industrial Chemistry

A loop resonator for slice-selective in vivo EPR imaging in rats

A loop resonator was developed for 300 MHz continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW-EPR) spectroscopy and imaging in live rats. A single-turn loop (55 mm in diameter) was used to provide sufficient space for the rat body. Efficiency for generating a radiofrequency magnetic field of 38 mu T/W-1/2 was achieved at the center of the loop. For the resonator itself, an unloaded quality factor of 430 was obtained. When a 350 g rat was placed in the resonator at the level of the lower abdomen, the quality factor decreased to 18. The sensitive volume in the loop was visualized with a bottle filled with an aqueous solution of the nitroxide spin probe 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-yloxy (3-CP). The resonator was shown to enable EPR imaging in live rats.
