Enhanced energy density of poly(arylene ether nitriles) composites filled with surface engineered BaTiO3 nanoparticles

The introduction of nano-sized BaTiO3 (BT) into polymer host matrices brings about promising dielectric and energy storage properties. However, pristine BT tends to aggregate and is difficult to be compatible with polymer matrices, thus requiring surface modification of BT nanoparticles. In this work, gamma-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) was grafted onto the surface of BT as a shell and amino-functionalized core-shell KH550@BT nanoparticles have been successfully prepared. Thereafter, poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) has been chosen as polymer matrix due to its excellent thermal properties, and xKH550@BT/(1-x)PEN composite films were prepared by solution casting film formation method. The energy density of KH550@BTIPEN composites with 30 wt.% filler loading is 1.30 J cm(-3) (eta = 61.32 %) at 150 MV m(-1), more than 36.84 % increase when compared with pristine PEN polymer (0.95 J cm(-3) at 170 MV m(-1)). Triarylborane catalysed N-alkylation of amines with aryl esters

The ability of halogenated triarylboranes to accept a lone pair of electrons from donor substrates renders them excellent Lewis acids which can be exploited as a powerful tool in organic synthesis. Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane has successfully demonstrated its ability to act as a metal-free catalyst for an ever-increasing range of organic transformations. Herein we report the N-alkylation reactions of a wide variety of amine substrates including diarylamines, N-methylphenyl amines, and carbazoles with aryl esters using catalytic amounts of B(C6F5)(3). This mild reaction protocol gives access to N-alkylated products (35 examples) in good to excellent yields (up to 95%). The construction of a C-N bond at the propargylic position has also been demonstrated to yield synthetically useful propargyl amines. On the other hand, unsubstituted 1H-indoles and 1H-pyrroles at the C3/C2 positions afforded exclusively C-C coupled products. Extensive DFT studies have been employed to understand the mechanism for this transformation.

Two new coordination compounds viz. [Ni(2,6-PDC)(Hdmpz)(H2O)(2)]center dot H2O (1) and [Zn(3-CNpy)(2)Cl-2] (2) (2,6-PDC = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate, Hdmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazole, 3-CNpy = 3-cyanopyridine) have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, electronic, infrared spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Crystal structure analyses reveal the presence of supramolecular assemblies involving interesting dimers with unconventional contacts in the compounds. DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations on the supramolecular dimers in the crystal structure of 1 reveal that the sum of contributions of anion-pi, pi-pi and other long range interactions due to the approximation of the bulk monomers is energetically significant. Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) surface and Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) analyses on the interesting supramolecular dimers of the crystal structures of 2 reveal the presence of unconventional anion center dot center dot center dot pi contacts involving coordinated chlorido ligands and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi(nitrile) interactions involving the pi-system of the nitrile moiety of 3-cyanopyridine. The toxicity of germander, a herb used to treat obesity, is attributed to cytochrome P450 activation of the furan ring of its major diterpenoid component (teucrin A) into a reactive metabolite capable of adducting proteins. 1,4-Enedials have been proposed to be the reactive products of metabolism, possibly arising from a rearrangement of putative epoxide intermediates. We synthesized the enedial derivative of teucrin A as well as the enedial derived from a model furan, 3-(4-methoxy-benzyloxymethyl)-furan, by dimethyldioxirane oxidation and characterized the products of their reactions with amino acids and peptides. The reactions of the model enedial, 2-(4-methoxy-benzyloxymethyl)-but-2-enedial,withN-acetyl lysine (NAL) afforded regioisomeric N-alkyl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones, differing in the substitution on the double bond of the heterocyclic ring. Novel products formed in the reactions of the model enedial with N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and both NAC/NAL uncovered the existence of tautomerization between the enedial and a hydroxyenal, which was manifest by the loss of 4-methoxybenzylalcohol and the incorporation of a second molecule of NAC. The reactions of teucrin A-enedial with NAC and NAL afforded analogues of the products observed with the model enedial, and the existence of the tautomeric equilibrium resulted in epimerization of the proton (H12) adjacent to the former furan ring. This work further illuminates the complex chemical behavior of unsaturated dialdehydes as an important class of toxic metabolites and lays the foundation for studies of the protein targets of teucrin A-enedial.

Free radical generation induced by ultrasound in red wine and model wine: An EPR spin-trapping study

Direct evidence for the formation of 1-hydroxylethyl radicals by ultrasound in red wine and air-saturated model wine is presented in this paper. Free radicals are thought to be the key intermediates in the ultrasound processing of wine, but their nature has not been established yet. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping with 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrrolin N-oxide (DMPO) was used for the detection of hydroxyl free radicals and 1-hydroxylethyl free radicals. Spin adducts of hydroxyl free radicals were detected in DMPO aqueous solution after sonication while 1-hydroxylethyl free radical adducts were observed in ultrasound-processed red wine and model wine. The latter radical arose from ethanol oxidation via the hydroxyl radical generated by ultrasound in water, thus providing the first direct evidence of the formation of 1-hydroxylethyl free radical in red wine exposed to ultrasound. Finally, the effects of ultrasound frequency, ultrasound power, temperature and ultrasound exposure time were assessed on the intensity of 1-hydroxylethyl radical spin adducts in model wine.
