Three-component access to 2-pyrrolin-5-ones and their use in target-oriented and diversity-oriented synthesis

The Hantzsch-type microwave-assisted, solvent-free sequential three-component reaction between primary amines, beta-dicarbonyl compounds and alpha-bromoesters in the presence of indium trichloride afforded 2-pyrrolin-5-ones, which are difficult to access by alternative methods. Ready access to these compounds allowed their use as synthetic building blocks in a target-oriented project aimed at the synthesis of a compound that had previously been postulated as a candidate for HIV integrase inhibition on the basis of computational studies. The versatility of 2-pyrrolin-5-ones was further verified by their use in a diversity-oriented synthesis context, leading to a library of highly functionalized bispiro compounds. The overall process leading to these compounds involved the generation of six bonds and two cycles over three steps, two of which are multicomponent, and the fully controlled generation of up to four stereocenters, including two quaternary ones.

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are a class of microporous polymers with rigid and contorted molecular structures. The special structures lead to incomplete space occupation, and the pores of PIMs originate from the formed void. In this work, we made attempts to expand the applications of PIMs to the aspect of heavy metal removal. First, PIM-1 was synthesized using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) and 5,5′,6,6′-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethyl-1,1′-spirobisindane (TTSBI) as precursors. The primary PIM-1 was quite hydrophobic, and thus could not be evenly dispersed in water, resulting in low adsorption capacity for mercury ions (Hg2+). A conversion of nitrile group in PIM-1 to thiol group was then carried out by two steps, namely carboxylation and introduction of thiol groups. The carboxylation made the polymers more active, and the final thiol-functionalization provided the polymers with hydrophilicity and affinity for Hg2+. The thiolethyl modified PIM-1 (assigned as PIM-G) and thiophenyl modified (assigned as PIM-B) possessed maximum Hg2+ adsorption capacity of 136 mg g(-1) and 127 mg g(-1) at pH 5, respectively. Besides, the thiol-functionalized PIMs had fluorescence property and showed potential in sensing for Hg2+.

Robust and recoverable dual cross-linking networks in pressure-sensitive adhesives

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) demand the ability to simultaneously improve toughness and adhesion. However, these requirements of PSAs have remained a great challenge because robust and recoverable characteristics are usually contradictory properties of PSAs. Dual cross-linking networks developed by incorporating dynamic noncovalent bonds into chemical cross-linking networks have the potential to mitigate these requirements in a wide variety of applications including adhesives, hydrogels, and elastomers. Herein, a facile approach to achieve dual cross-linking networks of acrylic PSAs with excellent mechanical properties and high-adhesive performance that integrate physically cross-linked networks into chemically cross-linked networks is proposed. Diurethane acrylic monomer-pentaerythritol ethoxylate (DAM-PEEL) groups were introduced into the acrylic PSA system through photopolymerization. The PSA/DAM-PEEL dual cross-linking networks led to the development of the chemically cross-linked networks for both PSA and DAM via covalent bonds and the physically cross-linked networks between the amide groups of DAM and the hydroxyl groups of PEEL via hydrogen bonds. Consequently, the PSA/DAM-PEEL dual cross-linking networks were able to simultaneously improve the modulus and stretchability. This design strategy for developing dual cross-linking networks of materials could offer potential applications for various adhesive-related applications.

Chemistry of Hermidin: Insights from Extraction Experiments with the Main Alkaloid of Mercurialis perennis L. Tracked by GC/MS and LC/MSn

Hermidin (1), a piperidine-2,3-dione alkaloid, has been previously detected as a lipophilic constituent in Mercurialis perennis L. and other Mercurialis species. Because of strong electron-withdrawing effects of its carbonyl groups, an acidic H-atom is easily subtracted from 1, whereas the latter shows high reactivity towards oxidation reactions or the attack of C-nucleophilic agents. To obtain a better understanding of possible chemical pathways upon extraction of root parts of M. perennis, the products obtained with different solvents from 1 were investigated. Extraction of M. perennis with aqueous MeOH or EtOH yielded a mixture of hermidin quinone (3), 5-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-(alkoxycarbonyl)-1-methyl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones, 7 and 8, and d, l- and meso-isochrysohermidins, 5 and 6, all of them being investigated by GC/MS and LC/MSn. The latter compounds were supposedly formed by free-radical reactions, followed by spontaneous benzilic acid rearrangement and esterification. Furthermore, extraction of M. perennis with aqueous Me2CO produced an aldol condensation product, the known alkaloid speranskatine A (9a), which was identified by NMR after chromatographic purification. In a similar manner, a CH2 homolog of speranskatine A (10a) was obtained as a novel compound when ethyl methyl ketone (= butan-2-one; EtCOMe) instead of Me2CO was used for extraction.
