Suzuki-Miyaura Arylations of Tetramic Acid Sulfonates: Evaluation of Lactam Protection, Sulfonate Esters, and Sterics

The synthesis of 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrroline-2-ones and 4-aryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones using Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of tetramic acid sulfonates with arylboronic acids has been studied. The effect that sulfonate ester, sterics, and lactam protection has on the cross-coupling reaction was evaluated. Zirconium promoter effect on catalytic activity of Pd based catalysts for heterogeneous hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber

Three PdZr bi-component catalysts supported on modified silica have been successfully synthesized via different Zr introduction methods and utilized for the hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) to produce high value-added hydrogenated NBR. It is demonstrated that the introduction of Zr can lead to the formation of small sized and electron-rich Pd nanoparticles and the order of adding Zr can significantly affect the catalytic activity. In particular, the PdZr bi-component catalyst obtained by introducing Zr followed by adding Pd is found to be more stable on the silica support, which exhibits a high hydrogenation degree of 90.9% with 100% selectivity to C–C bond, close to the single Pd catalyst with double Pd contents. The electronic structure and reaction mechanism analysis from density functional theory calculations further reveal that the addition of Zr component leads to negatively charged Pd species with lower energy barrier for the hydrogenation of C–C bond. Our findings provide a useful guidance for the design of efficient and low-cost bi-component catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated polymers.

Stable free radicals belonging to different classes have been synthesized in view of potential applications in studies of organized systems. Emphasis has then been laid upon the synthesis of further stable free radicals from the group of substituted nitronyl nitroxides. A general experimental procedure has been adapted according to the nature of the 2-substituent, resulting in a series of nitronyl nitroxides with a wide range of hydrophobicity and showing spectral parameters in good agreement with literature values. Chemistry of Hermidin: Insights from Extraction Experiments with the Main Alkaloid of Mercurialis perennis L. Tracked by GC/MS and LC/MSn

Hermidin (1), a piperidine-2,3-dione alkaloid, has been previously detected as a lipophilic constituent in Mercurialis perennis L. and other Mercurialis species. Because of strong electron-withdrawing effects of its carbonyl groups, an acidic H-atom is easily subtracted from 1, whereas the latter shows high reactivity towards oxidation reactions or the attack of C-nucleophilic agents. To obtain a better understanding of possible chemical pathways upon extraction of root parts of M. perennis, the products obtained with different solvents from 1 were investigated. Extraction of M. perennis with aqueous MeOH or EtOH yielded a mixture of hermidin quinone (3), 5-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-(alkoxycarbonyl)-1-methyl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones, 7 and 8, and d, l- and meso-isochrysohermidins, 5 and 6, all of them being investigated by GC/MS and LC/MSn. The latter compounds were supposedly formed by free-radical reactions, followed by spontaneous benzilic acid rearrangement and esterification. Furthermore, extraction of M. perennis with aqueous Me2CO produced an aldol condensation product, the known alkaloid speranskatine A (9a), which was identified by NMR after chromatographic purification. In a similar manner, a CH2 homolog of speranskatine A (10a) was obtained as a novel compound when ethyl methyl ketone (= butan-2-one; EtCOMe) instead of Me2CO was used for extraction. Consequently, 1 easily undergoes artefact formation upon extraction of plant material with polar or slightly polar solvents.

Effect of Li+ Affinity on Ionic Conductivities in Melt-Blended Nitrile Rubber/Polyether

Substituting flammable liquid electrolytes with solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) presents a serious challenge in improving the safety of lithium-ion batteries. Even though SPEs are a safer choice, their ionic transport properties are still lower than those of their liquid counterparts (<10(-4) S.cm(-1) at room temperature). Here, we report the preparation of a blend of polymers used as SPEs in lithium-ion batteries. Composed of an elastomer, hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), this blend combines the high conductivity of PEO and the stable properties of HNBR and shows better flexibility than a pristine PEO SPE. It is worth noting that the addition of HNBR, coupled with the intrinsic LiTFSI salt concentration, also reduces the crystallinity and melting temperature of typical PEO-LiTFSI SPEs; this also explains the higher ionic conductivity at low temperature (1.18 x 10(-4 )S.cm(-1) at 40 degrees C). Given these initial results, we may conclude that this polymer blend is a promising candidate as an SPE for all solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Piperonylonitrile solubility in thirteen pure solvents: Determination, Correlation, Hansen solubility parameter, solvent effect and thermodynamic analysis

This work was to investigate piperonylonitrile in terms of its solid-liquid equilibrium solubility in thirteen pure solvents by employing laser monitoring technique. Solubility measurements were completed in range of temperature at (288.15-323.15) K in 1,4-dioxane and at (278.15-323.15) K in isopropanol, 2-methoxyethanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate, methanol, n-propanol, n-propyl acetate, N,Ndimethylformamide (DMF), isopropyl acetate, methyl acetate, acetone as well as acetonitrile under 0.1 MPa. The holistic solubility profile showed that piperonylonitrile solubility in all measured solvents was proportional to the increasing of test temperature. It was also found that the mole-fraction solubility values of piperonylonitrile in measured solvents at 298.15 K exhibited a sequence of: DMF (0.2636) > 1,4dioxane (0.2212) > methyl acetate (0.1838) > acetone (0.1813) > ethyl acetate (0.1657) > n-propyl acetate (0.1486) > acetonitrile (0.1435) > isopropyl acetate (0.1295) > 2-methoxyethanol (0.1010) > methanol (0.01915) > ethanol (0.01664) > n-propanol (0.01594) > isopropanol (0.01268). The miscibility and solubility order of piperonylonitrile were further revealed by the means of Hansen solubility parameter, demonstrating that solubility behaviors could be well explained by the comprehensive action of various solubility parameters. Besides, the influence on the piperonylonitrile solubility of solute-solvent interaction and solvent-solvent interaction was illustrated via the KAT-LSER model. It was figured out that hydrogen bonding acidity and hydrogen bonding basicity exerted unfavorable influence on piperonylonitrile solubility. Moreover, the measured piperonylonitrile solubility was fitted with Wilson, NRTL, UNIQUAC, Two-Suffix Margules and NRTL-SAC model, and correlation of experimental results with the use of five activity coefficient models showed that sufficient agreement with the calculated data. Finally, the thermodynamic quantities (Delta H-mix, Delta(mix)G and Delta S-mix) of the mixing process in different solvents were computed based on measured solubility values and UNIQUAC model.
