EPR free induction decay coherence observed after a single pulse in saturation recovery experiments for samples with resolved multiline CW spectra

An electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-coherence signal has been observed following a single pulse for rapidly tumbling radicals with well-resolved nuclear hyperfine splitting in fluid solution when B, is large enough to excite multiple hyperfine lines. This coherence is distinct from the single-pulse echo signals discussed in the literature. For 2,6-di-t-butyl-1,4-benzosemiquinone, which has two resolved couplings (1.24 and 0.052 G), FID oscillations with a period that corresponds to the larger hyperfine coupling are observed on the coherence signal that arises from the smaller hyperfine coupling. If phase cycling is not perfect, the coherence signal can interfere with measurements of T-1 by saturation recovery.

Synthesis of Unsymmetrical 3,4-Diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones Utilizing Pyrrole Weinreb Amides

A regiocontrolled synthesis of unsymmetrical 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones has been achieved in three steps from 1,2-diaryl-1-nitroethenes with pyrrole-2-carboxamides (pyrrole Weinreb amides) serving as the key linchpin intermediates. Two different methods for the preparation of the requisite nitroalkenes were investigated: (1) modified Henry reaction between arylnitromethanes and arylimines; and (2) Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of 2-aryl-1-bromo-1-nitroethenes with arylboronic acids. Some difficulty was encountered in the preparation of arylnitromethanes, thus leading to the exploration of a cross-coupling strategy that proved more useful. A Barton-Zard pyrrole cyclocondensation reaction between 1,2-diaryl-1-nitroethenes and N-methoxy-N-methyl-2-isocyanoacetamide gave the corresponding pyrrole Weinreb amides, which were then converted into the desired 3-pyrrolin-2-ones in two steps. Overall, this method allowed for the construction of 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones with complete regiocontrol of the substituents with respect to the lactam carbonyl. The utility of this synthetic methodology was demonstrated by the preparation of eight unsymmetrical and symmetrical 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones including the N-H lactam analogue of the selective COX-II inhibitor, rofecoxib.

Can Medical-Grade Gloves Provide Protection after Repeated Disinfection?

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has generated an increased consumption of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and masks, by healthcare workers and by the general public at a global scale. This has generated substantial shortage of these single-use and disposable PPEs that will end up as a landfill waste. Extending the life cycle of PPEs, such as gloves, by disinfecting treatments could help mitigate these concerns. However, the effect of various disinfection treatments on the functionality of gloves is unknown. In this study, six commonly used viral disinfection treatment methods (i.e., ultraviolet (UV) radiation, dry heat, steam, alcohol, chlorine compounds, and quaternary ammonium compounds) were evaluated for their effect on the performance attributes of two commonly used medical-grade gloves and nitrile and vinyl (latex) gloves. The barrier properties of both gloves against water and ethanol vapor flux were not affected up to 10 cycles of disinfection cycles. However, the increase in the disinfection cycle from 10 to 20 slightly reduced their barrier properties with minor variation in the type of disinfection and glove type. Infrared spectroscopy and microscopy investigations confirmed that both types of gloves could withstand up to 20 cycles of disinfection treatments with no observable change in the chemical structure and surface morphology of the disinfected surfaces, respectively. Lastly, tear property testing of the gloves indicated little to no change from the baseline after 20 cycles of treatment in both the nitrile and vinyl-based gloves. Overall, this study indicated that alcohol, UV, and heat treatment could be acceptable disinfection methods that allow the reuse of gloves up to 20 cycles. Such repeated disinfection of gloves not only reduces the strain on the supply of gloves but also decreases the postconsumer landfilled waste and environmental footprint of gloves.

Separation of Tire Rubber Overlapping Terahertz Spectra Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorization of Spectral Feature Constraints

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) technology has been successfully applied to material detection and analysis, but the terahertz spectral data observed from a complex sample of rubber represents the comprehensive results of several interrelated components or interaction of characteristic components in many cases, where as the actual information contained in the raw data may overlap, which will conversely affect the analysis of the components in the rubber mixture. In order to solve the problem of terahertz spectral overlap, the characteristics of continuous smoothing of terahertz spectral matrix and sparse concentration matrix are combined this paper, then the 2 norms with smoothing characteristics and the 1/2 norm with sparsity characteristics into the non-negative matrix factorization method is introduced, which are applied to the separation of terahertz aliased spectra, so as eparation method of terahertz aliasing spectral based on spectral feature Constrained Non-negative Matrix Factorization (CNMF) is proposed. Firstly, nitrile-butadiene rubber combined with vulcanization accelerator 2-Mercaptobenzothizzole(MBT) to form a binary mixture in diverse proportions, and it combined with vulcanization accelerators MBT and tetramethyl thiuram monosulfide (TMTM) to form a ternary mixture in different proportions. Then the terahertz time domain spectrum of all samples ismeasured by terahertz spectroscopy system, which the measured data is subjected too btain a corresponding absorbance spectrum. Further, principal component analysis is performed on the obtained spectral matrix to initially determine the number of components of the mixture. Finally, the Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Non-negative Matrix Factorization based on pure variables initialization(PNMF) and CNMF methods are used to the decomposition of the mixture data matrix and spectral analysis of the aliased spectrum. The results show that the separation effect of the CNMF algorithm is better than that of NMF and PNMF method, and the corresponding results of the characteristic absorption peak are accurate. In addition, the correlation coefficients of separation results for different component mixtures are higher than 89%, and the spectral angles are less than 0.5 with a higher reduction degree of purity spectrum. Therefore, the constrained non-negative matrix factorization algorithm is introduced into the separation of terahertz aliasing spectra, which is preferable to extract the characteristic information of single components in complex mixtures and provides a better foundation for the qualitative analysis and quantitative calculation of subsequent terahertz multicomponent mixtures as well as the considerable research prospects in the field of quality testing of green tires and rubber.

Design and research of non-contact triboelectric nanogenerator based on changing electrostatic field

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and its self-powered sensor based on the principles of contact electricity generation and electrostatic induction have important application prospects in the fields of new energy and internet of things (IoT). In the contact separation process of polymer materials with different electronegativity values, due to the transfer of electrons, a changing electrostatic field will be generated in the space around the polymer. In the existing TENG research, the field strength perpendicular to the plane of the friction layer and the electrode layer is mainly used to generate electrostatic induction, and the electric field effect around the polymer is ignored. According to the principle of electrostatic induction, the internal charge of the conductor in the electric field will be redistributed, which provides a way for the conductor to generate an induced electrical signal on the surface of the conductor without contacting the friction material. In this paper, we design a non-contact triboelectric nanogenerator (NC-TENG) based on changing electrostatic field. The influence of the distance between the conductor and the friction material, the induction area of the conductor and the position of the conductor relative to the friction material on the induced electrical output performance are studied when silicone rubber and nitrile rubber are used as a friction material. The results show that the NC-TENG can produce a stable electrical signal output when the conductor is completely separated from the friction material. The induced voltage of NC-TENG decreases with the increase of the distance between the conductor and the friction material, and gradually increases with the increase of the conductor’s induction area. For the friction material with a size of 30 mm x 30 mm, the electrical output of NC-TENG tends to be stable when its conductor area is 60 mm x 45 mm. In addition, the different orientation of the conductor relative to the friction material also has a significant effect on the induced electrical output. The NC-TENG designed in this paper provides a novel electrical output generation mode, which provides a higher possibility for the subsequent research on TENG and the application of self-powered sensors.

Clean and molecularly programmable protocol for preparation of bis-heterobiarylic systems via a domino pseudocyclic reaction as a valuable alternative for TM-catalyzed cross-couplings

The domino sequence of pseudocyclic reactions involving 4-methoxybenzonitrile N-oxide and trans-2-phenyl-1-cyano-1-nitroethene proceeding in mild (r.t.; atm. pressure) non-catalytic (without participation of palladium or other transition metals (TM)) conditions yielded a bis-heterobiarylic molecular system containing an oxadiazole moiety with an almost 40% yield. The presented methodology represents therefore an evident contrast to the existing methods of preparation of bis-heterobiarylic systems, which require the presence of TMs. This reaction should be considered stereochemically clean and contains a stage of cycloaddition to the C=N bond. It should be underlined that this is the first case of non-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloaddition involving the nitrile C=N bond. Our comprehensive study shows that the described protocol can be applied as a general methodology for preparation of a wide group of bis-heterobiarylic molecules. The self-adjusted cascade of transformations, which is unique and valuable from the practical point of view, leads to formation of a single isomeric product (from many possible) as a consequence of three pseudocyclic tandem reactions performed in agreement with the fundamental principles of green chemistry and sustainable development with a maximal level of atom economy and good overall yields. A self-adjustment phenomenon observed in the studied smart technology leading to production of a material with special properties was explained by it deep quantum nature confirmed undoubtedly by the modern Molecular Electron Density Theory.
