This review presents a systematic survey of the literature (through the end of 2014) for de novo syntheses of 3-pyrrolin-2-ones from acyclic precursors or via transformation of other cyclic systems such as pyrroles, pyrrolidinone, and maleimides. The simultaneous incorporation of both a cyano group and a boryl unit into the C=C double bonds of allenes in a regio- and stereoselective fashion is of much interest and importance but remains a significant challenge. We report herein a copper-catalyzed chemo-, regio-, and enantioselective cyanoborylation of allenes, which afforded a family of valuable enantiopure beta-boryl allyl nitriles. The high enantioselectivity was achieved by installing of appropriate substituents at the C2 and C6 positions of the naphthyl groups in our newly synthesized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands. The reaction mechanism has been clarified by some stoichiometric reactions and computational studies. This work provides an inspiring example of the development of selective catalytic reactions for the synthesis of functional molecules through fine-tuning the ligands in catalysis.

Targeted development of hydrophilic porous polysulfonamide gels with catalytic activity

We report the use of a template and functional monomers in the synthesis of three novel polysulfonamide gels with new architectures and functional groups. These mesoporous polysulfonamide gels were prepared by the condensation polymerization of benzene-1,3-disulfonyl chloride (as the main precursor), linear monomers, and cross-linkers (as variable precursors) in the presence of a silica template by a combination of sol-gel chemistry and the nanocasting technique. In this synthesis pathway, in situ polymerization onto the template surface led to the construction of a silica/polymer nanocomposite. Next, after removal of the template, the nanocomposite gels were transformed into mesoporous polysulfonamide nanospheres. After the physicochemical identification of the synthesized materials, functionalized polysulfonamides were used as reusable novel catalysts with high efficiency for the Strecker reaction under mild conditions. These polymers have Brunsted/Lewis acid active sites, a mesoporous structure, and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, since these polymers are hydmgels that can absorb water, they can promote the Strecker reaction through chemical absorption of the generated water as a driving force. Overall, this article describes a novel synthesis procedure and application of porous polysulfonamide gels.

Morphology evolution, mechanical properties, Mullins effect, and its reversibility of polylactide/nitrile butadiene rubber thermoplastic vulcanizates plasticized by dioctyl phthalate

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on polylactide (PLA)/nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) blends were prepared by dynamic vulcanization where the PLA phase was plasticized by dioctyl phthalate (DOP), and the influence of DOP dosage on mechanical properties, morphology evolution, Mullins effect, and its reversibility were investigated systematically. The experimental results indicated that the mechanical properties of PLA/NBR TPVs were improved significantly with the addition of DOP. Compared with that of the PLA/NBR TPVs, the Shore A hardness was decreased obviously, while the elongation at break was increased slightly with increasing DOP dosage. Mullins effect results showed that the TPVs incorporated with DOP had the relatively lower stress-softening effect. The recovery ability of the maximum stress could be remarkably enhanced by increasing heat treatment temperature. Morphology studies showed that the network microstructure of the co-continuous phases was denser with the increasing dynamic vulcanization time; however, the network microstructure of the co-continuous was changed slightly with the addition of DOP.
