Antiplasmodial evaluation of these novel quinolines and their functionalized derivatives revealed moderate micromolar potency against a chloroquine-sensitive strain of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, and the two most potent compounds also showed micromolar activity against a chloroquine-resistant strain of P. falciparum. Antifungal assessment of (hydroxyalkylamino)quinolines revealed three compounds with promising MIC values against Rhodotorula bogoriensis and one compound with potent activity against Aspergillus flavus. Electroless Deposition of Ni-P Coatings on HNBR for Low Friction Rubber Seals

This paper reports a simple and cost-effective procedure to coat hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) with a well-adherent Ni-P film by using the electroless plating method. A HNBR surface functionalization process was first optimized, creating an interpenetrating network with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Silver nanoparticles were deposited on PVP and acted as catalysts for the Ni-P film deposition, eliminating the expensive tin-palladium sensitization/activation step. A homogeneous, low phosphorous Ni-P film was obtained after 60-120 min of plating in an alkaline bath, with an average thickness of 3 to 10 mu m, respectively. The PVP internetwork played an important role on the strong adhesion of the film, 1.0 +/- 0.5 MPa. The tribological behavior of Ni-P-plated HNBR samples was studied for 1, 5 and 10 N applied loads under dry sliding on a pin-on-disc configuration and the coefficient of friction (CoF) was reduced by similar to 30-49%, compared to uncoated HNBR (loads 1-5N). Based on these results, Ni-P-coated rubber can be regarded as a novel solution for enhancement of the tribological behavior of dynamic seals; it can be regarded as a means to avoid machinery failure. This method offers an alternative to the diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings.

P5CS expression level and proline accumulation in the sensitive and tolerant wheat cultivars under control and drought stress conditions in the presence/absence of silicon and salicylic acid

The effects of silicon (Si) and salicylic acid (SA) applications on proline content and expression of (1)-pyrrolin-5-carboxylate synthetase (P5CS) were examined under different drought levels and different drought exposure times. Two wheat cultivars, a drought tolerant and a drought sensitive were used. The experiment was a factorial based on completely randomized design with three replicates. Expression analysis by the quantitative real time PCR showed that the tolerant cultivar had significantly higher P5CS expressions compared to the sensitive one under drought stress. In sampling time points, the maximum level of mRNA was observed at 48h after stress was applied. At 48h after stress induction, the expression of P5CS was almost 3.1 fold higher in the tolerant cultivar compared to the sensitive one. In both cultivars, gene expression decreased from 48 to 72h. The stressed plants treated with Si+SA showed a higher expression. Proline content started to increase by Si and SA treatments and the maximum proline content was obtained at simultaneous application of Si+SA. Drought stress significantly reduced chlorophyll content, relative water content and leaf water potential of both cultivars, while increased electrolyte leakage (EL) of the leaves. In contrast, foliar-applied Si and SA significantly increased these parameters and reduced EL, and the effect of simultaneous application of Si and SA was greater. The results suggest that the P5CS is a stress inducible gene. This gene has the potential to be used for improvement of drought stress tolerance in wheat. Network analysis highlighted positive interaction of osmotic stress, drought and cold stress on P5CS1 and the regulatory role of MYB2, ERF-1, and EIN3 transcription factors. In conclusion, alleviation of drought stress by application of Si and SA was associated partially with enhanced expression of P5CS gene and following proline accumulation.

Vacuum-Ultraviolet Absorption Spectrum of 3-Methoxyacrylonitrile

The high-resolution absorption spectrum of 3-methoxyacrylonitrile (3MAN) was measured between 5.27 and 12.59 eV using a synchrotron-based Fourier-transform spectrometer. Evaluating the efficacy of a newly developed palm-based process aid on nitrile rubber composites

The exploration of bio-based process aid is still ongoing in the effort to replace petroleum-based process oil. In this study, the efficacy of a newly developed palm-based process aid (Bio) on nitrile rubber (NBR) composites was investigated by varying its concentration from 0.0 to 10.0 phr. A comparison was made against a commercial oil (CO), i.e. naphthenic oil in terms of Mooney viscosity, cure characteristics, morphology, physical, and chemical properties. Results revealed that the use of Bio as process aid improves the processability of rubber by lowering the Mooney viscosity, enhancing filler dispersion, and lowering loss tangent values. Tensile properties and compression sets of CO-NBR composites were slightly better compared to Bio-NBR composites. Interestingly, Bio-NBR composites showed better ageing properties, especially at higher process aid content. Higher retentions of tensile strength and elongation at break and lower compression sets of aged Bio-NBR compared to CO-NBR composites were observed, which are possibly contributed by the good compatibility of Bio with aged rubber. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability of Bio-NBR composites were slightly better than CO-NBR composites. Based on these findings, the use of Bio (>= 7.5 phr) as process aid significantly improved the processability of rubber with some enhancement in ageing properties of composites that is desirable and ideal for various applications such as for the production of automotive components.

Co-pyrolysis of textile dyeing sludge and red wood waste in a continuously operated auger reactor under microwave irradiation

The eco-friendly disposal of textile dyeing sludge (TDS) has become a worldwide environmental issue due to their complexity and toxicity. In this study, co-pyrolysis of TDS and red wood waste (RWW) in a continuously operated auger reactor under microwave irradiation was investigated, which was more environmentally friendly and created higher value added products. Effects of pyrolysis temperature and RWW ratio were studied to evaluate product distribution and properties. Increase of temperature and RWW ratio resulted in decrease in char yield and increase in gas yield. The contents of CO, CH4, and H-2 increased significantly with RWW ratio increased at 650 degrees C. The content of pyridines, amines, and nitriles enhanced sharply with increasing temperature from 450 to 750 degrees C. Co-pyrolysis promoted the Maillard reaction and cracking of nitrogen-containing pigments, forming large quantities of N-heterocyclics in bio-oil. Sludge char obtained by pyrolysis of TDS at 650 degrees C had a greater sulfur retention ability than chars from co-pyrolysis. The highest methylene blue number (372.25 mg/g) and iodine adsorption value (332.42 mg/g) were achieved from TDS and biochar (750 degrees C, 30 wt% RWW ratio), respectively.
