Liquid crystal dimers and the twist-bend nematic phase: On the role of spacers and terminal alkyl chains

The synthesis and characterisation of four series of liquid crystal dimers based on benzylideneaniline mesogenic units, and in which the lengths of terminal alkyloxy chains are varied are reported. The series differ in terms of their flexible spacers, namely, heptamethylene, nonamethylene, hexyloxy, and oxypentyloxy chains. The heptamethylene- and nonamethylene-linked dimers both show conventional nematic, N, and twist-bend nematic, N-TB, phases with short terminal chains, and smectic behaviour emerges on increasing terminal chain length. This is attributed to increased molecular inhomogeneity driving microphase separation. The dimers containing the shorter heptamethylene spacer show a smectic A phase whereas those with the longer nonamethylene spacer exhibit an anticlinic smectic C phase. Smectic behaviour is not observed for the dimers containing either a hexyloxy spacer which exhibit nematic and twist-bend nematic phases, or with an oxypentyloxy spacer which show only a conventional nematic phase. A general observation is that T-NTBN and T-NI alternate in the same sense in a homologous series on varying the length of the terminal alkyl chains suggesting that the spatial uniformity of the molecular curvature is an important factor in stabilising the N-TB phase. The transitional properties of the four corresponding dimers possessing nitrile terminal substituents are also described. These show enantiotropic nematic phases, and in addition, for those containing either polymethylene or hexyloxy spacers, a twist-bend nematic phase is observed. Differences in the thermal behaviour of the dimers may be attributed largely to changes in molecular shape arising from the nature of the link between the spacer and mesogenic units. Temperature Dependence of Hyperfine Interaction for N-15 Nitroxide in a Glassy Matrix at 10-210 K

Principal N-15 hyperfine interaction (hfi) values in N-15-substituted nitroxide spin probe 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-oxyl dissolved in nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) were measured in a wide temperature range of 10-210 K, for 5CB frozen to a glassy state. X-band continuous-wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW EPR) and pulse X- and Q-band N-15 electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) techniques were employed. To avoid microwave saturation at low temperatures in CW EPR studies, a holmium complex Ho(Dbm)(3)Bpy (where Dbm is dibenzoylmethane and Bpy is 2,2′-bipyridine) was added. X-and Q-band N-15-ENDOR data have shown that the nitroxide hfi tensor is axially symmetric. The combination of data from all techniques allowed us to obtain the temperature dependence of isotropic and anisotropic parts of the nitroxide hfi tensor. Above similar to 100 K, a linear dependence of the anisotropic hfi value was observed, whereas below 30 K it was found to be nearly temperature independent. Such a behavior can be interpreted using the model of restricted orientational motions (librations) of a spin probe in a glassy matrix, with quantum effects occurring at low temperature (freezing of the librations). The energy quantum for the libration motion estimated from the temperature dependence of hfi of the spin probe is 84 cm(-1). Low-frequency Raman spectra of 5CB were also obtained, which provided the mean vibrational frequency of 76 cm(-1) for glassy 5CB.

The study of genotoxicity of two newly synthesized pyrrolinone derivatives on L5178Y mouse lymphoma and bone marrow cells

Genotoxic activity of two newly synthesized pyrrolinone derivatives (lactone (PTB) and lactame (PTP)) was studied both in vitro and in vivo. The substances were incubated with L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells for 4 h, then washed from the substances, and incubated for 18 h. PTP induced significantly increased number of micronuclei (MN) only at the highest dose used (1000 mug/ml). The 20-fold increase of the concentration of PTP led to 2.4-fold increase of the number of MN. PTP wasn’t toxic for lymphoma cells in the applied concentration range. In contrast, PTB induced significantly increased number of MN in lymphoma cells beginning from the concentration of 50 mug/ml and was toxic for lymphoma cells at concentrations of 500 mug/ml and higher. In the comet assay with L5178Y mouse lymphoma cells both substances were active at all concentrations used (PTP at concentrations of 50 mug/ml and 100 mug/ml, and PTB at concentrations of 100 mug/ml and 250 mug/ml). Acute toxicity and MN-inducing activity of compounds were studied on Swiss albino mice. PTB was substantially more toxic for mice than PTP (LD50 was 200 mg/kg and 370 mg/kg respectively). In mouse bone marrow polychromatic erythrocytes PTP induced significantly increased number of MN only at a dose equal to 1/2 of LD50. In contrast, PTB was mutagenic at all doses used -1/2, 1/5, and 1/10 of LD50. At equitoxic doses PTB induced more than 2-fold and 3.5-fold increased levels of MN compared with PTP (1/2 and 1/5 of LD50 respectively). The replacement of =NH group to =O group in chemical structure of pyrrolinone derivatives leads to substantial increase in acute toxicity for mice (1.85-fold) and MN induction activity both in vivo and in vitro.

Enhanced energy density of poly(arylene ether nitriles) composites filled with surface engineered BaTiO3 nanoparticles

The introduction of nano-sized BaTiO3 (BT) into polymer host matrices brings about promising dielectric and energy storage properties. However, pristine BT tends to aggregate and is difficult to be compatible with polymer matrices, thus requiring surface modification of BT nanoparticles. In this work, gamma-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) was grafted onto the surface of BT as a shell and amino-functionalized core-shell KH550@BT nanoparticles have been successfully prepared. Thereafter, poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) has been chosen as polymer matrix due to its excellent thermal properties, and xKH550@BT/(1-x)PEN composite films were prepared by solution casting film formation method. The energy density of KH550@BTIPEN composites with 30 wt.% filler loading is 1.30 J cm(-3) (eta = 61.32 %) at 150 MV m(-1), more than 36.84 % increase when compared with pristine PEN polymer (0.95 J cm(-3) at 170 MV m(-1)).
