The high-resolution absorption spectrum of 3-methoxyacrylonitrile (3MAN) was measured between 5.27 and 12.59 eV using a synchrotron-based Fourier-transform spectrometer. Comparisons with the experimental absorption spectrum reveal the similarities and differences between 3MAN, a bifunctional molecule, with acrylonitrile and methyl-vinylether, where only one functional group is present. As in acrylonitrile, several broad valence transitions were observed up to the ionization limit. They are likely associated with the extended pi-system induced by the nitrile group but might also involve sigma sigma* transitions close to the ionization limit. As in methylvinylether, Rydberg series converging to the ionization limit are absent. This is attributed to a difference in neutral and cationic geometry due to a 60 degrees rotation of the methyl group.

Evaluation of Aging Behavior of Nitrile Butadiene Rubbers via Oxygen-consumption Experiments

The aging behavior of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) was studied by performing a thermo-oxidatively accelerated-aging test in a closed oxygen-rich atmosphere. The oxygen-consumption rates of the aged NBR were measured and correlated with changes in the chemical and physical properties of the rubber. Changes in the morphological, chemical, and mechanical properties of the aged NBR were examined via scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and tensile tests. Morphological observations revealed that the aging conditions severely degraded the surface of the NBR, and additive particles migrated from the inner part of the NBR to the surface at temperatures above 60 degrees C. XPS indicated that the surface or cross-sectional face of the NBR was oxidized heterogeneously after the thermo-oxidative aging. The oxidation induced cross-linking, which caused the tensile modulus of the NBR to increase with an increase in the aging time and temperature; tensile elongation tended to decrease. The results of the thermo-oxidative accelerated-aging test were analyzed based on the Arrhenius model, using data of the oxygen-consumption rates. Finally, the activation energy of the degradation process was determined and the lifetime of the NBR was calculated. The lifetime of NBR conserved at 25 degrees C was estimated to be 11.12 years at a 40 % oxygen-consumption rate.

Enhanced energy density of poly(arylene ether nitriles) composites filled with surface engineered BaTiO3 nanoparticles

The introduction of nano-sized BaTiO3 (BT) into polymer host matrices brings about promising dielectric and energy storage properties. However, pristine BT tends to aggregate and is difficult to be compatible with polymer matrices, thus requiring surface modification of BT nanoparticles. In this work, gamma-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) was grafted onto the surface of BT as a shell and amino-functionalized core-shell KH550@BT nanoparticles have been successfully prepared. Thereafter, poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) has been chosen as polymer matrix due to its excellent thermal properties, and xKH550@BT/(1-x)PEN composite films were prepared by solution casting film formation method. The energy density of KH550@BTIPEN composites with 30 wt.% filler loading is 1.30 J cm(-3) (eta = 61.32 %) at 150 MV m(-1), more than 36.84 % increase when compared with pristine PEN polymer (0.95 J cm(-3) at 170 MV m(-1)). Temperature-dependent and frequency-dependent D-E loops confirmed that KH550@BTIPEN composites possess good temperature and frequency stability. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Free radical generation induced by ultrasound in red wine and model wine: An EPR spin-trapping study

Direct evidence for the formation of 1-hydroxylethyl radicals by ultrasound in red wine and air-saturated model wine is presented in this paper. Free radicals are thought to be the key intermediates in the ultrasound processing of wine, but their nature has not been established yet. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin trapping with 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrrolin N-oxide (DMPO) was used for the detection of hydroxyl free radicals and 1-hydroxylethyl free radicals. Spin adducts of hydroxyl free radicals were detected in DMPO aqueous solution after sonication while 1-hydroxylethyl free radical adducts were observed in ultrasound-processed red wine and model wine. The latter radical arose from ethanol oxidation via the hydroxyl radical generated by ultrasound in water, thus providing the first direct evidence of the formation of 1-hydroxylethyl free radical in red wine exposed to ultrasound. Finally, the effects of ultrasound frequency, ultrasound power, temperature and ultrasound exposure time were assessed on the intensity of 1-hydroxylethyl radical spin adducts in model wine. Theoretical Study of the Mechanism of Palladium(0)-Catalyzed Intramolecular [2+2+2] Cycloaddition of Ester-Substituted Alkynes

The mechanisms of the palladium(0)-catalyzed cross [2+2+2] cycloaddition of a diyne diester with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate and of the [2+2+2] cyclization of a triyne diester were investigated using density functional theory calculations. After evaluating the kinetic and thermodynamic profiles of each reaction, the roles of the ester substituents on the alkyne substrates and of the triphenylphosphine ligand are discussed based on the obtained results. Moreover, the previously unreported cross [2+2+2] cycloaddition of the diyne diester with nitriles was also investigated, in order to evaluate its feasibility under the relevant experimental conditions.
