We report the first systematic evaluation of the reaction of trifluoromethyl diazomethane (2,2,2-trifluorodiazoethane, CF3CHN2) with drug-like molecules. Triarylborane catalysed N-alkylation of amines with aryl esters

The ability of halogenated triarylboranes to accept a lone pair of electrons from donor substrates renders them excellent Lewis acids which can be exploited as a powerful tool in organic synthesis. Tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane has successfully demonstrated its ability to act as a metal-free catalyst for an ever-increasing range of organic transformations. Herein we report the N-alkylation reactions of a wide variety of amine substrates including diarylamines, N-methylphenyl amines, and carbazoles with aryl esters using catalytic amounts of B(C6F5)(3). This mild reaction protocol gives access to N-alkylated products (35 examples) in good to excellent yields (up to 95%). The construction of a C-N bond at the propargylic position has also been demonstrated to yield synthetically useful propargyl amines. On the other hand, unsubstituted 1H-indoles and 1H-pyrroles at the C3/C2 positions afforded exclusively C-C coupled products. Extensive DFT studies have been employed to understand the mechanism for this transformation.

Enhanced energy density of poly(arylene ether nitriles) composites filled with surface engineered BaTiO3 nanoparticles

The introduction of nano-sized BaTiO3 (BT) into polymer host matrices brings about promising dielectric and energy storage properties. However, pristine BT tends to aggregate and is difficult to be compatible with polymer matrices, thus requiring surface modification of BT nanoparticles. In this work, gamma-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (KH550) was grafted onto the surface of BT as a shell and amino-functionalized core-shell KH550@BT nanoparticles have been successfully prepared. Thereafter, poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) has been chosen as polymer matrix due to its excellent thermal properties, and xKH550@BT/(1-x)PEN composite films were prepared by solution casting film formation method. The energy density of KH550@BTIPEN composites with 30 wt.% filler loading is 1.30 J cm(-3) (eta = 61.32 %) at 150 MV m(-1), more than 36.84 % increase when compared with pristine PEN polymer (0.95 J cm(-3) at 170 MV m(-1)). Prebiotic synthesis of cysteine peptides that catalyze peptide ligation in neutral water

Peptide biosynthesis is performed by ribosomes and several other classes of enzymes, but a simple chemical synthesis may have created the first peptides at the origins of life. alpha-Aminonitriles-prebiotic alpha-amino acid precursors-are generally produced by Strecker reactions. However, cysteine’s aminothiol is incompatible with nitriles. Consequently, cysteine nitrile is not stable, and cysteine has been proposed to be a product of evolution, not prebiotic chemistry. We now report a high-yielding, prebiotic synthesis of cysteine peptides. Our biomimetic pathway converts serine to cysteine by nitrile-activated dehydroalanine synthesis. We also demonstrate that N-acylcysteines catalyze peptide ligation, directly coupling kinetically stable-but energy-rich-alpha-amidonitriles to proteinogenic amines. This rare example of selective and efficient organocatalysis in water implicates cysteine as both catalyst and precursor in prebiotic peptide synthesis.

Evaluating the efficacy of a newly developed palm-based process aid on nitrile rubber composites

The exploration of bio-based process aid is still ongoing in the effort to replace petroleum-based process oil. In this study, the efficacy of a newly developed palm-based process aid (Bio) on nitrile rubber (NBR) composites was investigated by varying its concentration from 0.0 to 10.0 phr. A comparison was made against a commercial oil (CO), i.e. naphthenic oil in terms of Mooney viscosity, cure characteristics, morphology, physical, and chemical properties. Results revealed that the use of Bio as process aid improves the processability of rubber by lowering the Mooney viscosity, enhancing filler dispersion, and lowering loss tangent values. Tensile properties and compression sets of CO-NBR composites were slightly better compared to Bio-NBR composites. Interestingly, Bio-NBR composites showed better ageing properties, especially at higher process aid content. Higher retentions of tensile strength and elongation at break and lower compression sets of aged Bio-NBR compared to CO-NBR composites were observed, which are possibly contributed by the good compatibility of Bio with aged rubber. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability of Bio-NBR composites were slightly better than CO-NBR composites. Based on these findings, the use of Bio (>= 7.5 phr) as process aid significantly improved the processability of rubber with some enhancement in ageing properties of composites that is desirable and ideal for various applications such as for the production of automotive components.
