A catalyst-free and recycle-reinforcing elastomer vitrimer with exchangeable links

Vitrimers, as intriguing polymers, possess exchangeable links in the crosslinking networks, endowing them with the abilities of recycling and reprocessing. However, most of vitrimers are generally fabricated via complex synthesis and polymerization processes. Toxic and unstable exogenous catalysts are inevitably applied to activate the exchange reaction to rearrange the crosslinking networks. These drawbacks limit the widespread applications of vitrimers. Moreover, most reported vitrimers could only partially maintain or severely deteriorate their mechanical properties after recycling. Herein, to solve the above-mentioned problems, for the first time, a catalyst-free and recycle-reinforcing elastomer vitrimer is revealed. By the reactive blending of commercially available epoxidized natural rubber and carboxylated nitrile rubber, the elastomer vitrimer associated with exchangeable beta-hydroxyl ester bonds was obtained. Strikingly, the vitrimer exhibits an exceptional recycle-reinforcing property. This work provides a feasible method to fabricate elastomer vitrimers, which promotes the recycling of crosslinking commercial available elastomers.

To bring our photochemical model of Pluto’s atmosphere and ionosphere (Krasnopolsky, 2020) into agreement with the recent detection of 5 x 10(15) cm(-2) methylacetylene C3H4 (Steffl et al., 2020), rate coefficients of the three key reactions of C3H4 production and loss have been changed to values calculated by (2019). This change reduces the abundance of cyanoacetylene HC3N close to the measured ALMA upper limit (Lellouch et al., 2017), increases the model abundances of H-2 and C3H8 by factors of 1.3, and reduces the abundances of H and C4H2 by factors of 1.3, while other species are changed less than 5% in the model. The predicted abundance of atomic hydrogen agrees with that derived from the observed Lyman-beta emission by Steffl et al. (2020). The observed (HCN)-N-14/(HCN)-N-15 > 125 on Pluto (Lellouch et al., 2017) looks puzzling compared to (HCN)-N-14/(HCN)-N-15 = 60 on Titan. Our analysis confirms the predissociation of N 2 at 80-100 nm as the main process of nitrogen isotope fractionation. The observed twofold difference is partially caused by the diffusive depletion of the heavy isotope in HCN and in the predissociation of N-2. On Pluto, the mean altitudes of HCN and predissociation of N-2 are 500 and 860 km, well above the homopause at 96 km. On Titan, observations of (HCN)-N-14/(HCN)-N-15 refer to 90-460 km (Vinatier et al., 2007), the predissociation occurs near 985 km, both below the homopause at 1000 km, and diffusive depletion does not occur. Therefore the observed limit corresponds to N-14/(15) N > 253 for N-2 in the lower atmosphere and N-14/N-15 > 228 in the upper layers of the N-2 ice. These limits reflect the conditions on Pluto in the last two million years, which is the lifetime of N-2 in Pluto’s atmosphere with the current N-2 loss of 37.5 g cm(-2) Byr(-1) primarily for photodestruction. The calculated isotope fractionation factor of 1.96 accounts for the formation and condensation of nitriles, diffusive separation, and fractionation in thermal escape. Variations of N-14/N-15 in the N-2 ice are related to the evolution of the solar EUV, mixing processes in the N-2 ice, and possible periods of hydrodynamic escape, which are poorly known and not considered here.

Palladium-PEPPSI-NHC Complexes Bearing Imidazolidin-2-Ylidene Ligand: Efficient Precatalysts for the Direct C5-Arylation of N-Methylpyrrole-2-Carboxaldehyde

The Pd-catalyzed direct arylation of pyrroles is an important research field for organic synthesis and catalysis chemistry. However, imidazolidin-2-ylidene based Pd-NHC complexes (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) have not yet been employed as catalysts for the direct C5 mono-arylation of C2-substituted N-methylpyrrole derivatives with aryl halides. Therefore, we now report the synthesis and characterization of new 1,3-bis(substituted benzyl) imidazolinium salts as carbene precursors, and their corresponding Pd-PEPPSI-NHC type complexes (PEPPSI=Pyridine Enhanced Precatalyst Preparation Stabilization and Initiation). The catalytic properties of these complexes have been evaluated in the direct C5 mono-arylation of N-methylpyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde with a wide variety of (hetero)aryl halides. This environmentally attractive procedure has also been found to be tolerant to a wide variety of functional groups on the aryl halides such as formyl, acetyl, nitrile, fluoro or trifluoromethyl, and good yields have been obtained in presence of 1 mol% catalyst loading at 120 degrees C. The isolation wards, institutional quarantine centers, and home quarantine are generating a huge amount of biomedical waste (BMW) worldwide since the outbreak of novel coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). The personal protective equipment, testing kits, surgical facemasks, and nitrile gloves are the major contributors to waste volume. Discharge of a new category of BMW (COVID-waste) is of great global concern to public health and environmental sustainability if handled inappropriately. It may cause exponential spreading of this fatal disease as waste acts as a vector for SARS-CoV-2, which survives up to 7 days on COVID-waste (like facemasks). Proper disposal of COV1D-waste is therefore immediately requires to lower the threat of pandemic spread and for sustainable management of the environmental hazards. Henceforth, in the present article, disinfection technologies for handling COV1D-waste from its separate collection to various physical and chemical treatment steps have been reviewed. Furthermore, policy briefs on the global initiatives for COVID-waste management including the applications of different disinfection techniques have also been discussed with some potential examples effectively applied to reduce both health and environmental risks. A review on pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass: Nitrogen transformation

Pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass, such as microalgae, macroalgae, sewage sludge, energy crops, and some lignocellulosic biomass, produces bio-oil with high nitrogen (N) content, sometimes as high as 10 wt% or even higher. Major nitrogenous compounds in bio-oil include amines/amides, N-containing heterocycles, and nitriles. Such bio-oil cannot be used as fuel directly since the high N content will induce massive emission of nitrogen oxides during combustion. The present review comprehensively summarized the effects of biomass compositions (i.e., elemental, biochemical, and mineral compositions) and pyrolysis parameters (i.e., temperature, heating rate, atmosphere, bio-oil collection/fractionation methods, and catalysts) on the contents of N and the N-containing chemical components in bio-oil. The migration and transformation mechanisms of N during the pyrolysis of biomass were then discussed in detail. Finally, the research gaps were identified, followed by the proposals for future investigations to achieve the denitrogenation of bio-oil.

Enhanced thermal conductivity of carboxyl nitrile butadiene rubber composites with low-cost poly(catechol/polyamine) modified Al2O3 via biomimetic method

With the miniaturization, integration, and functionalization of the electronic components, heat dissipation in the electronic devices has become a challenging issue. Owing to high polarity, carboxyl nitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR) is usually employed as a dielectric material in the electronic devices. However, low thermal conductivity of XNBR hardly satisfies the increasingly stricter demands for heat dissipation. Herein, we used low-cost poly (catechol/polyamine) (PCPA) to modify Al2O3 nanoparticles via biomimetic method for enhancing the interfacial interaction between the Al2O3 filler and XNBR. The ortho-polyphenols in catechol were oxidized into orthoquinone groups in the alkaline solution. Then, the ortho-quinone groups formed a cross-linked structure to obtain PCPA via the Michael addition or Schiff base reaction with amine. The process decreased the interfacial thermal resistance and phonon scattering, resulting in an enhanced thermal conductivity. When the Al2O3-PCPA nanoparticles content was 30 vol%, the thermal conductivity of XNBR based composites reached up to 0.51 W/ mK, which was 3.19 times that of pure XNBR (0.16 W/mK). The proposed method has potential applications in large scale production of thermally conductive composites in industries, such as electronic packaging materials and thermal management materials.
