Assessing the Effect of Hofmeister Anions on the Hydrogen-Bonding Strength of Water via Nitrile Stretching Frequency Shift

The temperature dependence of the peak frequency (nu(max)) of the C equivalent to N stretching vibrational spectrum of a hydrogen-bonded C equivalent to N species is known to be a qualitative measure of its hydrogen-bonding strength. Herein, we show that within a two-state framework, this dependence can be analyzed in a more quantitative manner to yield the enthalpy and entropy changes (Delta H-HB and Delta S-HB) for the corresponding hydrogen-bonding interactions. Using this method, we examine the effect of ten common anions on the strength of the hydrogen-bond(s) formed between water and the C equivalent to N group of an unnatural amino acid, p-cyanophenylalanine (Phe(CN)). We find that based on the Delta H-HB values, these anions can be arranged in the following order: HPO42- > OAc- > F- > SO42- approximate to Cl- approximate to (H2O) approximate to ClO4- approximate to NO3- > Br- > SCN- approximate to I-, which differs from the corresponding Hofmeister series. Because PheCN has a relatively small size, the finding that anions having very different charge densities (e.g., SO42- and ClO4-) act similarly suggests that this ranking order is likely the result of specific ion effects. Since proteins contain different backbone and side-chain units, our results highlight the need to assess their individual contributions toward the overall Hofmeister effect in order to achieve a microscopic understanding of how ions affect the physical and chemical properties of such macromolecules. In addition, the analytical method described in the present study is applicable for analyzing the spectral evolution of any vibrational spectra composed of two highly overlapping bands.

Evaluating the efficacy of a newly developed palm-based process aid on nitrile rubber composites

The exploration of bio-based process aid is still ongoing in the effort to replace petroleum-based process oil. In this study, the efficacy of a newly developed palm-based process aid (Bio) on nitrile rubber (NBR) composites was investigated by varying its concentration from 0.0 to 10.0 phr. A comparison was made against a commercial oil (CO), i.e. naphthenic oil in terms of Mooney viscosity, cure characteristics, morphology, physical, and chemical properties. Results revealed that the use of Bio as process aid improves the processability of rubber by lowering the Mooney viscosity, enhancing filler dispersion, and lowering loss tangent values. Tensile properties and compression sets of CO-NBR composites were slightly better compared to Bio-NBR composites. Interestingly, Bio-NBR composites showed better ageing properties, especially at higher process aid content. Higher retentions of tensile strength and elongation at break and lower compression sets of aged Bio-NBR compared to CO-NBR composites were observed, which are possibly contributed by the good compatibility of Bio with aged rubber. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability of Bio-NBR composites were slightly better than CO-NBR composites. Based on these findings, the use of Bio (>= 7.5 phr) as process aid significantly improved the processability of rubber with some enhancement in ageing properties of composites that is desirable and ideal for various applications such as for the production of automotive components.

Solubility Measurement and Data Correlation of Thiabendazole in 12 Pure Organic Solvents from 283.15 to 323.15 K

The solubility of thiabendazole (TBZ) in 12 organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, acetone, butanone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, and acetonitrile) was determined by the gravimetric method from 283.15 to 323.15 K. The solubility in all selected solvents increases with increasing temperature and in acetonitrile changes much greater than that in other solvents as temperature increases. The solubility of TBZ is higher in alcohol and ketone solvents than those in esters and nitriles. Besides, the solubility is mainly related to the solvent polarity and cohesive energy density in nonalcohols and influenced by the complicated combination of many factors in alcohols. Further, the Apelblat model, lambda h model, and NRTL model were used to correlate the solubility of TBZ. The relative deviation is less than 2.23% with the modified Apelblat equation, which shows better fitting performance compared with other two models.
