Electroless Deposition of Ni-P Coatings on HNBR for Low Friction Rubber Seals

This paper reports a simple and cost-effective procedure to coat hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) with a well-adherent Ni-P film by using the electroless plating method. A HNBR surface functionalization process was first optimized, creating an interpenetrating network with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Silver nanoparticles were deposited on PVP and acted as catalysts for the Ni-P film deposition, eliminating the expensive tin-palladium sensitization/activation step. A homogeneous, low phosphorous Ni-P film was obtained after 60-120 min of plating in an alkaline bath, with an average thickness of 3 to 10 mu m, respectively. The tribological behavior of Ni-P-plated HNBR samples was studied for 1, 5 and 10 N applied loads under dry sliding on a pin-on-disc configuration and the coefficient of friction (CoF) was reduced by similar to 30-49%, compared to uncoated HNBR (loads 1-5N). Based on these results, Ni-P-coated rubber can be regarded as a novel solution for enhancement of the tribological behavior of dynamic seals; it can be regarded as a means to avoid machinery failure. Highly Proton Conductive Sulfonyl Imide Based Polymer Blended from Poly(arylene ether sulfone) and Parmax-1200 for Fuel Cells

Thermally and chemically stable, sulfonyl imide-based polymer blends have been prepared from sulfonimide poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SI-PAES) and sulfonimide Parmax-1200 (SI-Parmax-1200) using the solvent casting method. Initially, sulfonimide poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SI-PAES) polymers have typically been synthesized via direct polymerization of bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfonyl imide (SI-DCDPS) and bis(4-fluorophenyl) sulfone (DFDPS) with bisphenol A (BPA). Subsequently, SI-Parmax-1200 has been synthesized via post-modification of the existing Parmax-1200 polymer followed by sulfonation and imidization. The SI-PAES/SI-Parmax-1200 blend membranes show high ion exchange capacity ranging from 1.65 to 1.97 meq/g, water uptake ranging from 22.8 to 65.4% and proton conductivity from 25,9 to 78.5 mS/cm. Markedly, the SI-PAES-40/SI-Parmax-1200 membrane (blended-40) exhibits the highest proton conductivity (78.5 mS/cm), which is almost similar to Nafion 117 (R) (84.73 mS/cm). The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fenton’s test confirm the excellent thermal and chemical stability of the synthetic polymer blends. Furthermore, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study shows a distinct phase separation at the hydrophobic/hydrophilic segments, which facilitate proton conduction throughout the ionic channel of the blend polymers. Therefore, the synthetic polymer blends represent an alternative to Nafion 117 (R) as proton exchangers for fuel cells.

Computational exploration of the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of 7-isopropylidenebenzonorbornadiene with nitrile oxide and cyclic nitrone derivatives

The synthesis of isoxazolidine and isoxazole derivatives, versatile building blocks for the construction of a wide range of complex heterocyclic architectures in synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry, is efficiently achieved via the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction (1,3-DC). Herein, we report an extensive theoretical study on the peri-, regio-, stereo, and enantio-selectivities of 1,3-DC of 7-isopropylidenebenzonorbornadiene with nitrile oxide and cyclic nitrone derivatives using density functional theory calculations. Acetophenone-substituted nitrile oxide periselectively adds across the endocyclic olefinic bond of the dipolarophile to furnish the exo-cycloadduct as the major product, a reaction that has a rate constant of 1.88 x 10(9) s(-1). The endo approach of this periselective path is the closest competing pathway with a rate constant of 4.59 x 10(7) s(-1). Different substituents on the nitrile oxide do not affect the peri- and stereo-selectivity of the reaction. Diethyl ether solvation has no substantial effect on the energetic patterns observed in the gas phase computation. Also, we report a novel 1,3-DC between cyclic nitrone derivatives and 7-isopropylidenebenzonorbornadiene as an efficient way to generate isoxazolidine derivatives. Even though the reactions of the cyclic nitrone derivatives have slightly higher activation barriers than the acyclic nitrile oxide derivatives, the former is more enantioselective than the latter. Whereas electron-donating groups (EDGs) on the cyclic nitrone favor the formation of the exo-cycloadduct, electron-withdrawing groups (EWGs) favor the formation of the endo-cycloadduct. Both 1,3-dipoles add across the dipolarophile via a concerted asynchronous mechanism.

Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization and molecular dynamics simulations using pyrroline and piperidine ring nitroxide radicals

The efficiency of Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) depends on the local dynamics modulating the dipolar coupling between the two interacting spins. By attaching nitroxide based spin labels to molecules and by measuring the H-1 DNP response of solvent water, information about the local hydration dynamics near the spin label can be obtained. However, there are two commonly used types of nitroxide ring structures; a pyrroline based and a piperidine based molecule. It is important to know when comparing different experiments, whether changes in DNP enhancements are due to changes in local hydration dynamics or because of the different spin label structures. In this study we investigate the key parameters affecting DNP signal enhancements for 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-oxyl, a 5-membered ring nitroxide radical, and for 4-oxo-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy, a 6-membered ring nitroxide radical. Using X-Band DNP, field cycling relaxometry, and molecular dynamics simulations, we conclude that the key parameters affecting the DNP amplitude of the H-1 signal of water to be equal when using either nitroxide. The use of pseudo enantiomers is a well-known method of achieving products of complementary stereochemistry. Only rarely can different enantiomers of a product be accessed without modulation of the catalyst. Recently, a system was reported wherein two different enantiomers of spirocycles were obtained by a cascade reaction of unsaturated pyrrolin-4-ones with mercaptoacetaldehyde catalyzed by a single optimized cinchona alkaloid squaramide-derived organocatalyst. It was originally proposed that the E/Z geometry of the unsaturated pyrrolin-4-one dictated the stereochemistry of the spirocycle product, but this was not investigated further. In the present work, we have investigated the nature of a pseudo-enantiomeric organocatalyst conformation applying density functional theory calculations for investigating the transition states for the reaction. Furthermore, the influence of the double-bond geometry of the pyrrolin-4-one has been studied beyond what is possible to test experimentally. The results provide a greater understanding for this class of reactions that may be applicable in future methodology development.
