Palladium-PEPPSI-NHC Complexes Bearing Imidazolidin-2-Ylidene Ligand: Efficient Precatalysts for the Direct C5-Arylation of N-Methylpyrrole-2-Carboxaldehyde

The Pd-catalyzed direct arylation of pyrroles is an important research field for organic synthesis and catalysis chemistry. However, imidazolidin-2-ylidene based Pd-NHC complexes (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) have not yet been employed as catalysts for the direct C5 mono-arylation of C2-substituted N-methylpyrrole derivatives with aryl halides. Therefore, we now report the synthesis and characterization of new 1,3-bis(substituted benzyl) imidazolinium salts as carbene precursors, and their corresponding Pd-PEPPSI-NHC type complexes (PEPPSI=Pyridine Enhanced Precatalyst Preparation Stabilization and Initiation). The catalytic properties of these complexes have been evaluated in the direct C5 mono-arylation of N-methylpyrrole-2-carboxaldehyde with a wide variety of (hetero)aryl halides. This environmentally attractive procedure has also been found to be tolerant to a wide variety of functional groups on the aryl halides such as formyl, acetyl, nitrile, fluoro or trifluoromethyl, and good yields have been obtained in presence of 1 mol% catalyst loading at 120 degrees C. Effects of precipitated size of water-soluble amide-containing polymers and pore size of filters on recovery of Pd nanoparticles dispersed in acetone solution including colloidal polymer

When immobilized Pd nanoparticles (Pd NP) are used for the hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), some Pd NP leaks into the reaction medium. This Pd NP is expensive and must be recovered. In this study, Pd NP were recovered from an NBR acetone medium by precipitation with poly N-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl] methacrylamide (poly(DAEMA)) and filtration. When poly(DAEMA) solution was added to the Pd NP NBR acetone solution, poly(DAEMA) interacted with Pd NP and formed a precipitate by dehydration. The poly(DAEMA) precipitate including trapped Pd NP was completely recovered by filtration through a filter with a pore size of 1 mu m. Poly(acrylamide) solutions of different molecular weights were tested for Pd NP recovery, and those with high molecular weights formed large quantities of precipitates, resulting in low recovery percentages. The concentration and molecular weight of the polymer used for the recovery of Pd NP by nanoprecipitation and filtration must be chosen carefully for optimal recovery. Especially, 40 kDa of PAA and 1 mu m filter pores were suitable for efficient Pd NP recovery.

Design and synthesis of a competent pyrrolinone-peptide hybrid ligand for the class II major histocompatibility complex protein HLA-DR1

The design and synthesis of two pyrrolinone-peptide hybrid ligands (3 and 20) for the rheumatoid arthritis-associated class II MHC HLA-DR1 protein are described. Ligand construction employed our polypyrrolinone synthetic protocol, in conjunction with Fmoc-based solid-phase peptide synthesis. Bioaffinity studies reveal that hybrid ligand 3 bound the HLA-DR1 protein with affinity (IC50 = 137 nM) comparable to those of both the native HA 306-318 peptide (IC50 = 89 nM) and a control peptide (IC50 = 176 nM). This result demonstrates that the polypyrrolinone scaffold can be employed in the construction of bioactive peptide hybrid ligands, thus considerably expanding the scope and utility of the pyrrolinone scaffold.

Theoretical investigation of protonated thiophene and two of its nitrile substituted derivatives (2-cyanothiophene and 3-cyanothiophene)

Theoretical and experimental spectroscopic data for protonated cyano-thiophenes (R-CNH+ with R = C4H3S), which are needed for their interstellar search and/or detection, are still lacking in the literature. Considering the high abundance and reactivity of H-3(+) in the interstellar medium (ISM), a quantum chemical investigation on protonated thiophene and two of its nitrile-substituted derivatives (2-cyanothiophene and 3-cyanothiophene) is undertaken for their characterization. The geometrical structures for the title species are calculated at the M06-2X/6-31G(d,p) level of theory, followed by an empirical correction for systematic errors. At the same level of theory, IR and Raman spectra are explored and the rotational parameters are calculated. The proton affinity (PA) of R-CN and the enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy changes (Delta H-r, Delta S-r and Delta(r)G) of the reactions producing R-CNH+ are computed at the G2(MP2) and G3B3 levels of theory and at different temperatures. The PA calculations show that the protonation favors the nitrogen atom, while Delta H-r, Delta S-r, and Delta(r)G reveal the spontaneous reactions producing R-CNH+ and their neutral forms. In addition, quadrupole hyperfine structures are predicted, while the region where the brightest lines fall at different temperatures is discussed. These results are expected to assist astrophysicists and astrochemists in the search for new species in the ISM.

Effect of Li+ Affinity on Ionic Conductivities in Melt-Blended Nitrile Rubber/Polyether

Substituting flammable liquid electrolytes with solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) presents a serious challenge in improving the safety of lithium-ion batteries. Even though SPEs are a safer choice, their ionic transport properties are still lower than those of their liquid counterparts (<10(-4) S.cm(-1) at room temperature). Here, we report the preparation of a blend of polymers used as SPEs in lithium-ion batteries. Composed of an elastomer, hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR), and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), this blend combines the high conductivity of PEO and the stable properties of HNBR and shows better flexibility than a pristine PEO SPE. It is worth noting that the addition of HNBR, coupled with the intrinsic LiTFSI salt concentration, also reduces the crystallinity and melting temperature of typical PEO-LiTFSI SPEs; this also explains the higher ionic conductivity at low temperature (1.18 x 10(-4 )S.cm(-1) at 40 degrees C). Given these initial results, we may conclude that this polymer blend is a promising candidate as an SPE for all solid-state lithium-ion batteries.
