Magnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles functionalized with citric acid as a green nanocatalyst for one-pot three-component sonochemical synthesis of substituted 3-pyrrolin-2-ones

A clean, convenient and facile approach for one-pot ultrasonic assisted synthesis of substituted 3-pyrrolin-2-ones from diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, aniline and aldehyde derivatives is described. The reactions were carried out in the presence of an efficient, green and reusable acidic nanocatalyst, magnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles functionalized with citric acid (CoFe2O4@CA), with high yields under mild conditions. Also, use of ultrasound irradiation made this approach an attractive protocol for the synthesis of these products. The method has been successful in achieving the green chemistry objective. An energy efficient protocol using ultrasound irradiation instead of conventional heating or stirring and use of ethanol as a non-hazardous, inexpensive and green solvent in the one-step reaction against sequential reaction steps thus combining the features of both economic and environmental advantages. Enhanced thermal conductivity of carboxyl nitrile butadiene rubber composites with low-cost poly(catechol/polyamine) modified Al2O3 via biomimetic method

With the miniaturization, integration, and functionalization of the electronic components, heat dissipation in the electronic devices has become a challenging issue. Owing to high polarity, carboxyl nitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR) is usually employed as a dielectric material in the electronic devices. However, low thermal conductivity of XNBR hardly satisfies the increasingly stricter demands for heat dissipation. Herein, we used low-cost poly (catechol/polyamine) (PCPA) to modify Al2O3 nanoparticles via biomimetic method for enhancing the interfacial interaction between the Al2O3 filler and XNBR. The ortho-polyphenols in catechol were oxidized into orthoquinone groups in the alkaline solution. Then, the ortho-quinone groups formed a cross-linked structure to obtain PCPA via the Michael addition or Schiff base reaction with amine. The process decreased the interfacial thermal resistance and phonon scattering, resulting in an enhanced thermal conductivity. When the Al2O3-PCPA nanoparticles content was 30 vol%, the thermal conductivity of XNBR based composites reached up to 0.51 W/ mK, which was 3.19 times that of pure XNBR (0.16 W/mK). The proposed method has potential applications in large scale production of thermally conductive composites in industries, such as electronic packaging materials and thermal management materials.

This study describes a benign C-H cyanation of terminal alkynes with alpha-cyanoesters serving as a nontoxic cyanide source. In situ generation of the key copper cyanide intermediate is proposed by a sequence of alpha-C-H oxidation and copper-mediated beta-carbon elimination of alpha-cyanoesters, releasing the alpha-ketoester byproduct observed experimentally. The ensuing reaction of copper cyanide with terminal alkynes delivers preferentially cyanoalkynes and surpasses the possible Glaser type dimerization of terminal alkynes or the undesired accumulation of HCN under protic conditions. The presence of the co-oxidant K2S2O8 is crucial to this selectivity, probably by promoting oxidative transmetalation and the resulting formation of the Cu(iii)(acetylide)(CN) intermediate. All the reagents and salts used are commercially available, cheap and nontoxic, avoiding the use of highly toxic cyanide salts typically required in cyanation studies. The scope of this reaction is demonstrated with a set of alkynes and alpha-cyanoesters. The application of this method to late-stage functionalization of the terminal alkyne group in an estrone derivative is also feasible, showing its practical value for drug design.

Vacuum-Ultraviolet Absorption Spectrum of 3-Methoxyacrylonitrile

The high-resolution absorption spectrum of 3-methoxyacrylonitrile (3MAN) was measured between 5.27 and 12.59 eV using a synchrotron-based Fourier-transform spectrometer. It was related to an absolute absorption cross-section scale. Complementary calculations at the DFT-MRCl/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory document the vertical transition energies and oscillator strengths toward the first 19 states of both the E and Z geometrical isomers of 3MAN. Comparisons with the experimental absorption spectrum reveal the similarities and differences between 3MAN, a bifunctional molecule, with acrylonitrile and methyl-vinylether, where only one functional group is present. As in acrylonitrile, several broad valence transitions were observed up to the ionization limit. They are likely associated with the extended pi-system induced by the nitrile group but might also involve sigma sigma* transitions close to the ionization limit. As in methylvinylether, Rydberg series converging to the ionization limit are absent. This is attributed to a difference in neutral and cationic geometry due to a 60 degrees rotation of the methyl group.
