A review on pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass: Nitrogen transformation

Pyrolysis of protein-rich biomass, such as microalgae, macroalgae, sewage sludge, energy crops, and some lignocellulosic biomass, produces bio-oil with high nitrogen (N) content, sometimes as high as 10 wt% or even higher. Major nitrogenous compounds in bio-oil include amines/amides, N-containing heterocycles, and nitriles. Such bio-oil cannot be used as fuel directly since the high N content will induce massive emission of nitrogen oxides during combustion. The present review comprehensively summarized the effects of biomass compositions (i.e., elemental, biochemical, and mineral compositions) and pyrolysis parameters (i.e., temperature, heating rate, atmosphere, bio-oil collection/fractionation methods, and catalysts) on the contents of N and the N-containing chemical components in bio-oil. The migration and transformation mechanisms of N during the pyrolysis of biomass were then discussed in detail. Finally, the research gaps were identified, followed by the proposals for future investigations to achieve the denitrogenation of bio-oil.

The irradiation in an aqueous aprotic solvent, however, allowed the concurrent occurrence of intramolecular cyclization by the singlet-excited nitro group in 1a and the hydroxylation at the 2-position of the pyrrole ring by water to afford 3,7-dichloro-8-hydroxy-8,8a-dihydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indol-2-one (3a), accompanied by the formation of 2a. Elongation of the irradiation time in these photoreactions caused a rapid consumption of the products, 2a and 3a, to give undetermined polar polymeric products. The present results indicate that the photodegradation of 1a is significantly influenced by the presence of water in the reaction media and by the nature of its excited state. Thus, the loss of the antifungal activities by the photosensitive antibiotic 1a was chemically proved.

Thiol-functionalized PIM-1 for removal and sensing for mercury (II)

Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are a class of microporous polymers with rigid and contorted molecular structures. The special structures lead to incomplete space occupation, and the pores of PIMs originate from the formed void. In this work, we made attempts to expand the applications of PIMs to the aspect of heavy metal removal. First, PIM-1 was synthesized using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) and 5,5′,6,6′-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethyl-1,1′-spirobisindane (TTSBI) as precursors. The primary PIM-1 was quite hydrophobic, and thus could not be evenly dispersed in water, resulting in low adsorption capacity for mercury ions (Hg2+). A conversion of nitrile group in PIM-1 to thiol group was then carried out by two steps, namely carboxylation and introduction of thiol groups. The carboxylation made the polymers more active, and the final thiol-functionalization provided the polymers with hydrophilicity and affinity for Hg2+. The thiolethyl modified PIM-1 (assigned as PIM-G) and thiophenyl modified (assigned as PIM-B) possessed maximum Hg2+ adsorption capacity of 136 mg g(-1) and 127 mg g(-1) at pH 5, respectively. Besides, the thiol-functionalized PIMs had fluorescence property and showed potential in sensing for Hg2+.
