We discovered that rinse water from nitrile gloves instantly kills 99% of Bd and Bsal zoospores. Transmission experiments using midwife toads (Alytes obstetricans) and Bd, and Alpine newts (Ichthyosaura alpestris) and Bsal, show that the use of the same pair of gloves for 2 subsequent individuals does not result in significant transmission of any chytrid fungus. In contrast, handling infected amphibians bare-handed caused transmission of Bsal in 4 out of 10 replicates, but did not result in transmission of Bd. Based on the manufacturer’s information, high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and colorimetric tests, calcium lactate and calcium nitrate were identified as compounds with antifungal activity against both Bd and Bsal. These findings corroborate the importance of wearing gloves as an important sanitary measure in amphibian disease prevention. If the highly recommended single use of gloves is not possible, handling multiple post-metamorphic amphibians with the same pair of nitrile gloves should still be preferred above bare-handed manipulation.

Bacterial profiles and volatile flavor compounds in commercial Suancai with varying salt concentration from Northeastern China

Suancai, a popular traditional fermented cabbage in northeast China, is commonly prepared by the spontaneous fermentation process at a certain salt concentration. The salt can affect the metabolites by affecting the microorganisms during Suancai fermentation. The bacterial community and volatile flavor compounds in commercial Suancai from different regions of Northeastern China at different salt concentrations were investigated using next-generation sequencing and GC-MS. Firmicutes and Cyanobacteria were the dominant phyla in the commercial Suancai, and Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Leuconostoc were the dominant genera. Among them, Lactobacillus and Pediococcus were considered as the biomarkers of the low and high salt Suncai, respectively. Eighty-five volatile flavor compounds were detected, and HS exhibited higher contents of volatile flavor compounds than LS. Based on the results of correlation analysis, Pediococcus were highly correlated with the alcohols and nitriles in Suancai. The contents of alcohols and nitriles significantly increased in the Suancai, fermented by Pediococcus pentosaceus. The co-inoculated fermentation of Lactobacillus plantarum and P. pentosaceus could increase the concentrations of alcohols, esters, aldehydes, hydrocarbons, and nitriles in Suancai. This study provides a perspective for understanding the ecology of Suancai fermentation and facilitating the fermentation with multispecies inoculation fermentation at an appropriate salt concentration.

A general experimental procedure has been adapted according to the nature of the 2-substituent, resulting in a series of nitronyl nitroxides with a wide range of hydrophobicity and showing spectral parameters in good agreement with literature values. Using the spin probe-electron spin resonance technique, 3 and the 1-H-imidazol-1-yloxy-4, 5-dihydro-4,4,5, 5-tetramethyl-2-ethyl-3-oxide (7, R = C2H5) or the 1-H-imidazol-1-yloxy-4,5-dihydro-4,4,5,5 (7, R = C11H23) have been applied in ESR investigations on vesicle phases of a zwitterionic surfactant (TDMAO)/perfluorocosurfactant (PFC) system and on Triton X-100 reverse micelles, respectively.
