Polymerization mechanism of 4-APN and a new catalyst for phthalonitrile resin polymerization

The widely used catalysts for phthalonitrile (PN) resin polymerization are aromatic compounds containing -NH2 because of their high catalytic performances. However, the catalytic mechanisms of these catalysts are not very clear. To understand the mechanisms of them, the widely used autocatalytic catalyst 4-(4-aminophenoxy)-phthalonitrile (4-APN) was studied in this paper. The polymerization process of 4-APN was tracked by a multi-purpose method, and ammonia gas was detected during the cross-linking processing for the fist time. Combined with the online IR results of the curing process of 4-APN, the mechanism of ammonia generation was newly proposed. Based on this mechanism, a new catalyst selection strategy was promoted, which is different from the traditional approach to catalyst selection for PN resin polymerization. According to the new strategy, 1,3-diiminoisoindoline (1,3-DII) was selected as a novel catalyst. The results showed that the new catalyst could not only effectively catalyze the polymerization of PN resin, but also has a lower curing temperature than that of organic amine catalysts and can eliminate the release of ammonia gas and the voids in the products caused thereby. Therefore, the results of this study will give important enlightenment to the development of PN catalysts and the development of PN.

Ligand-controlled self-assembly of Ag(I) complexes with cyano-containing ligands and their tunable antimicrobial activities

Complexes 1-3 ([Ag-2(CF3COO)2(1,4-dcb)(S)]center dot 2ofbp center dot H2O, 1, S=benzene, 2, S=toluene 3, S= m-xylene) were synthesized by the same linear spacer (1,4-dcb) in different solvents, and they exhibit similar 2D networks assembled by 1,4-dcb ligand bridging with 1D chains composing of anions and different coordinating solvents. Complex 4 ([Ag-2(CF3COO)(2)(bpcn)(2)]center dot C6H6 center dot 2ofbp center dot H2O) was isolated by replacing 1,4-dcb to the longer linear spacer (bpcn) however it shows a quite different 1D chain structure from those of 1-3. Further changing ligand to p-phda resulted only compound c as a co-crystal of p-phda and of bp. These totally different crystal structures suggest the ligand-controlled self-assembly processes. The followed antimicrobial assay results demonstrate that all complexes have effective antimicrobial activities with broad spectra. They exhibit excellent antimicrobial activities with low MICs towards both Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria and yeast. Especially, they illustrate encouraging antibacterial activities against antibiotic resistant bacteria (P. aeruginosa). It’s found that these frameworks have discriminating capacities to release Ag+ ions in water sustainably. Complex 4 demonstrated the best antimicrobial efficacy among five complexes. It’s revealed that the ligand exchangeability plays an important role in the anti-microbial activities. The lower concentration of Ag+ ions release of complex 3 is attributed to its compact packing structure on the basis of structure-property discussions.

The production of 2-deoxyribonolactones (C1′-oxidation product), C4′-oxidized abasic sites and C5′-carbonyl terminated strand scission products was investigated in complexes of double-stranded DNA with protamine, poly-L-lysine and spermine exposed to X-ray radiation. The lesions were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography through the release of the corresponding low-molecular-weight products 5-methylenefuran-2(5H)-one, N-(2′-hydroxyethyl)-5-methylene-D3-pyrrolin-2-one and furfural, respectively. All binders were found to increase the relative yield of C1′ oxidation up to 40% of the total 2-deoxyribose damage through the indirect effect versus approximately 18% typically found in homogeneous solutions by the same technique. On the contrary, the yield of C5′-oxidation was found to be suppressed almost completely, while in homogeneous solutions it constituted approximately 14% of the total. The observed change in end product distribution is attributed to free valence transfer to and from the complexing agent, although the mechanisms associated with this process remain unclear.
