Influence of the ancillary ligands on the luminescence of platinum(II) complexes with a triazole-based tridentate C boolean OR N boolean OR N luminophore

The effect of different ancillary ligands and counterions in platinum(II) complexes has been investigated. Based on the previously reported tridentate C<^>N<^>N ligand precursor 2-(1-benzyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)-6-phenylpyridine (HL), the photophysical properties of complexes of the type [Pt(L)(X)](n+) have been varied by changing the fourth (monodentate) ligand (X) of the square-planar platinum(II) complexes. Different lifetimes and quantum yields were observed, depending on the identity of this ancillary ligand. The most favorable photophysical properties within this series of complexes were obtained for neutral complexes with the phenylacetylido ligand with a quantum yield of 35% and a lifetime of 2.22 mu s, while for cationic complexes bearing nitrile, isonitrile and triphenylphosphane units gave comparable results with quantum yields ranging from 11% to 16% and lifetimes from 3.59 mu s to 4.93 mu s. Introducing a ferrocene moiety attached to an acetylido ligand, the complex became hardly emissive. The investigated counterions perchlorate, tetrafluoroborate and hexafluorophosphate of positively charged complexes regarding their photophysical properties were found to affect the non-radiative decay rates. To understand the minor effect observed for the emission maxima of the complexes, density functional theory (DFT) was applied. The experimental emission spectra of the complexes were reproduced by using simplified model systems. The distribution of the frontier orbitals used for the description of the emissive T-1 state in its optimized geometry mainly involves the tridentate luminophore rather than the ancillary ligand. This explains why the emission is dominated by the pincer unit with perturbative participation of the metal center while excluding significant influence of the ancillary ligand.

Conformational Analysis, Spectroscopy and Photochemistry of Matrix-Isolated 1H- and 2H- Tautomeric Forms of Ethyl Tetrazole-5-Carboxylate

The preferred conformations, infrared spectra and photochemistry of matrix-isolated 1H and 2H tautomers of ethyl tetrazole-5-carboxylate (ET5C) were investigated. Experimentally, isolated monomeric forms of the two tautomers were trapped in cryogenic argon matrices (15 K), and studied by infrared spectroscopy. Identification of the conformational species trapped in the matrices was undertaken by combining the experimental spectro-scopic data with results of quantum chemical calculations performed at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. For each tautomer, two conformers were observed in the matrices, all forms exhibiting the ester group in the anti configuration (C-O-C-C dihedral equal to 180 degrees). In turn, the conformers having a gauche ester group that are predicted by the calculations to be significantly populated in the gas phase equilibrium (room temperature), were found to convert into the anti forms during matrix deposition (conformational cooling). Very interestingly, and contrarily to what is in general found for tetrazoles, the 1H tautomer is the most stable tautomer of ET5C, and strongly predominates in the studied matrices. Narrowband UV irradiation (lambda = 250 nm) was found to lead to tetrazole fragmentation, with release of molecular nitrogen and production of four isomeric photoproducts (diazirine, cyanamide, carbodiimide and nitrile imine), all of them being successfully identified through comparison of the experimental spectroscopic spectra of the irradiated matrices with the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d, p) predicted infrared spectra of these species. This study also stresses the structural relevance of the N-H//O = C intramolecular interaction between the ring hydrogen atom and the carbonyl group of the substituent in the 1H tautomer of ET5C.

The high resolution vibrational spectrum of ethyl cyanide (C2H5CN) has been investigated in the far-IR using synchrotron-based Fourier transform spectroscopy. Solubility Measurement and Data Correlation of Thiabendazole in 12 Pure Organic Solvents from 283.15 to 323.15 K

The solubility of thiabendazole (TBZ) in 12 organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, acetone, butanone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, and acetonitrile) was determined by the gravimetric method from 283.15 to 323.15 K. The solubility in all selected solvents increases with increasing temperature and in acetonitrile changes much greater than that in other solvents as temperature increases. The solubility of TBZ is higher in alcohol and ketone solvents than those in esters and nitriles. Besides, the solubility is mainly related to the solvent polarity and cohesive energy density in nonalcohols and influenced by the complicated combination of many factors in alcohols. Further, the Apelblat model, lambda h model, and NRTL model were used to correlate the solubility of TBZ. The relative deviation is less than 2.23% with the modified Apelblat equation, which shows better fitting performance compared with other two models.

Development of a Drone-Based Thin-Film Solid-Phase Microextraction Water Sampler to Facilitate On-Site Screening of Environmental Pollutants

To simplify on-site water sampling and screening, particularly in hard-to-reach or dangerous sites, a drone equipped with a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), thin-film solid-phase microextraction (TF-SPME) sampler was developed. The drone-based sampler was shown to protect the sorbent phase from external contamination while preventing any detectable loss of components of a spiked modified McReynolds mixture on the membrane in the sampler for at least 10 min. HLB/poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) membranes deployed in flight on the drone sampler were demonstrated to extract disinfection by-products, including trichloromethane, dichloroacetonitrile, 1,1,1-trichloro-2-propanone, 2,2,2-trichloroethanol, benzonitrile, and benzyl nitrile, from hot tub water. When analyzed on-site, in duplicate, using hand-portable instrumentation, reasonably repeatable results were achieved (%relative standard deviations (RSD’s) 5-16%). Finally, drone TF-SPME sampling of an anthropogenically impacted watercourse indicated that impact from the suspected nearby landfill site was minimal, instead suggesting that internal combustion by-products from vehicles on the nearby Highway 401 played a much larger role in contaminating the watercourse. This conclusion was supported by the confirmed presence of BTEX, styrene, isopropylbenzene, propylbenzene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene. In addition to immediately identifying these compounds on-site using portable gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), samples were taken back to the laboratory for benchtop analysis, further supporting this conclusion.
