Simulation and experimental study of a new structural rubber seal for the roller-cone bit under high temperature

Seal element is an important component of roller-cone bit. In order to improve the sealing performance and service life of roller-cone bit under high temperature, a new seal structure with multi-segment arcs is designed and the structural parameters of this sealing ring are optimized by response surface method and finite element method. Firstly, the hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber is used to improve the seal performance under high temperature, and the uniaxial, planar, and biaxial tensile experiments are carried out to study the constitutive model of this rubber. Then, a three-dimension transient thermo-mechanical coupling model is established. The comparison of sealing performance between the new structural seal and the traditional O-ring seal is implemented under high temperature through the proposed FEM and laboratory experiments. The results show that the new structural seal has lower contact pressure and Mises stress than the standard O-ring seal, and the service life of the former is almost twice of the later one. Additionally, a composite drill bit using the new structural seal is applied to a deep drilling. After servicing a certain time, it shows that the wearing capacity is very small. The results show that the new structure seal ring can adapt to high temperature environment and the optimization method is feasible.

Multicomponent reaction-derived covalent inhibitor space

The area of covalent inhibitors is gaining momentum due to recently introduced clinical drugs, but libraries of these compounds are scarce. Multicomponent reaction (MCR) chemistry is well known for its easy access to a very large and diverse chemical space. Here, we show that MCRs are highly suitable to generate libraries of electrophiles based on different scaffolds and three-dimensional shapes and highly compatible with multiple functional groups. According to the building block principle of MCR, acrylamide, acrylic acid ester, sulfurylfluoride, chloroacetic acid amide, nitrile, and alpha,beta-unsaturated sulfonamide warheads can be easily incorporated into many different scaffolds. We show examples of each electrophile on 10 different scaffolds on a preparative scale as well as in a high-throughput synthesis mode on a nanoscale to produce libraries of potential covalent binders in a resource-and time-saving manner. Our operational procedure is simple, mild, and step economical to facilitate future covalent library synthesis.

Effect of Particle Wettability and Particle Concentration on the Enzymatic Dehydration of n-Octanaloxime in Pickering Emulsions

Pickering emulsion systems have emerged as platforms for the synthesis of organic molecules in biphasic biocatalysis. Herein, the catalytic performance was evaluated for biotransformation using whole cells exemplified for the dehydration of n-octanaloxime to n-octanenitrile catalysed by an aldoxime dehydratase (OxdB) overexpressed in E. coli. This study was carried out in Pickering emulsions stabilised solely with silica particles of different hydrophobicity. We correlate, for the first time, the properties of the emulsions with the conversion of the reaction, thus gaining an insight into the impact of the particle wettability and particle concentration. When comparing two emulsions of different type with similar stability and droplet diameter, the oil-in-water (o/w) system displayed a higher conversion than the water-in-oil (w/o) system, despite the conversion in both cases being higher than that in a classic two-phase system. Furthermore, an increase in particle concentration prior to emulsification resulted in an increase of the interfacial area and hence a higher conversion.

Effects of precipitated size of water-soluble amide-containing polymers and pore size of filters on recovery of Pd nanoparticles dispersed in acetone solution including colloidal polymer

When immobilized Pd nanoparticles (Pd NP) are used for the hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), some Pd NP leaks into the reaction medium. This Pd NP is expensive and must be recovered. In this study, Pd NP were recovered from an NBR acetone medium by precipitation with poly N-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl] methacrylamide (poly(DAEMA)) and filtration. When poly(DAEMA) solution was added to the Pd NP NBR acetone solution, poly(DAEMA) interacted with Pd NP and formed a precipitate by dehydration. The poly(DAEMA) precipitate including trapped Pd NP was completely recovered by filtration through a filter with a pore size of 1 mu m. Poly(acrylamide) solutions of different molecular weights were tested for Pd NP recovery, and those with high molecular weights formed large quantities of precipitates, resulting in low recovery percentages. The concentration and molecular weight of the polymer used for the recovery of Pd NP by nanoprecipitation and filtration must be chosen carefully for optimal recovery. Especially, 40 kDa of PAA and 1 mu m filter pores were suitable for efficient Pd NP recovery.

INFLUENCE OF MICROSPHERES ON PROPERTIES OF AGGRESSIVE RESISTANT RUBBERS

The aim of the work is to study the effect of hollow corundum, glass and pomegranate ceramic microspheres on the rheometric characteristics of aggressive resistant rubber mixtures and the physicomechanical parameters of their vulcanizates to determine of the content of fillers of this type, which provides an improvement in the priority properties of products and, as a result, an increase in their durability. The objects of research were two rubber mixtures intended for compression molding and injection molding. The compression molding mixture is based on a combination of nitrile butadiene, isoprene and butadiene-a-methyl styrene caoutchoucs with colloidal silicic acids as the main fillers. And the injection molding mixture is based on a combination of synthetic isoprene and butadiene rubbers filled with chalk, P234 carbon black and carbon 100. We used hollow corundum (HMC-L), glass (MS-V), and pomegranate ceramic (MVMD-170) microspheres. The rheometric properties of the rubber compounds were evaluated by the values of the minimum and maximum torques, the duration of the induction period, the time to reach the technological optimum, and the maximum vulcanization rate. When testing vulcanizates, conditional tensile strength, elongation at break, tear resistance, hardness, abrasion and rebound elasticity were determined. Priority indicators were also determined that correlated to the greatest extent with the durability of the products during operation – relative changes in conditional tensile strength and elongation at break, hardness after heat aging in air and standard liquid SZhR-1, change in mass of samples after swelling in industrial oil I-20A and Nefras S-80/120. For a mixture for compression molding, the effect of the type of microspheres introduced at a dosage of 5 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass caoutchoucs, on the properties of unvulcanized mixtures and vulcanizates was studied. It was found that the rubber mixture with glass microspheres is somewhat below in vulcanization activity, and its vulcanizate in terms of abrasion resistance, heat aging, especially in air, is inferior to two mixtures and rubbers with corundum and pomegranate microspheres. In the second mixture, we tested corundum microspheres with a dosage of 3.0 to 7.0 parts by mass per 100 parts by mass of caoutchoucs while reducing by the appropriate amount of carbon black. It was found that with an increase in the dosage of microspheres, a decrease in the vulcanization activity of the mixture, minimum and maximum torques, and also their difference is observed, which indicates a slight decrease in the degree of crosslinking of rubbers. The consequence is an increase in relative lengthening of the vulcanizates. To the least extent, this effect manifests itself with the introduction of corundum microspheres in a dosage of 3 parts by mass. Thus, the advantage of rubbers with microspheres is reduced abrasion, higher tear resistance while maintaining resistance to the action of physically and chemically aggressive environments at the level of rubbers that do not contain microspheres.
