The scope of a recently discovered (Yoon, E.C. et al.J.Am.Chem.Soc. 1995, 117, 2698), azomethine ylide-forming photoreaction has been explored by probing the excited state chemistry of several N-trimethylsilylmethyl substituted cyclic and acyclic imides and amide analogs.Photolysis of N-<(trimethylsilyl)methyl>maleimide (4) in acetonitrile leads to efficient production of the tricyclic product 16, formed by trapping of the photogenerated azomethine ylide intermediate 15 through cycloaddition with 4.Irradiation 4 in solutions containing high concentrations of the dipolarophiles, acrylonitrile or fumaronitrile, results in production of the products (19-21 and 23-24, respectively) arising by cycloaddition of the ylide 15 with the added dipolarophiles.In contrast, photolysis of the nonconjugated cyclic imide, N-<(trimethylsilyl)methyl>succinimide (5), brings about N-acyl migration resulting in the exclusive production of the unstable, iminolactone 30.On the other band, acyclic, N-trimethylsilylmethyl aroyl imides 6-8 undergo the excited state C to O silyl migration reaction to produce azomethine ylide intermediates 35.Both in the presence or absence of added dipolarophiles, these ylides undergo electrocyclization to form transient aziridine intermediates 36 which react further by ring opening to generate N-phenacylamide products 32-34.In contrast, the nonconjugated imide, N-<(trimethylsilyl)methyl>-N-acetylacetamide (9), is unreactive upon irradiation.Similarly, simple N-<(trimethylsilyl)methyl>amides 10-13, while being photochemically labile, do not react to form “trappable” ylide intermediates upon irradiation.The results outlined above are presented and discussed in terms of the scope and limitations of the new, azomethine ylide-forming photoreaction of silylmethyl imides.

Efficient and Expeditious Protocols for the Synthesis of Racemic and Enantiomerically Pure Endocyclic Enecarbamates from N-Acyl Lactams and N-Acyl Pyrrolidines

A mild, practical, and straightforward protocol for the construction of endocyclic enecarbamates starting from N-acyl lactams and N-acyl pyrrolidines is presented. Lactams were reduced to the corresponding alpha-hydroxycarbamates in good to excellent yields using DIBAL-H, SuperHydride, or NaBH4 followed by beta-elimination (dehydration) promoted by trifluoroacetic anhydride in the presence of hindered nitrogenated bases such as 2,6-lutidine, diisopropylethylamine, or triethylamine. Small variations of this protocol permitted the preparation of several endocyclic enecarbamates (12 examples) in good to excellent overall yields (56-96%). The protocol was demonstrated to be applicable to several ring sizes, compatible with different protecting groups, and to be mild enough to prevent racemization of racemization-prone stereocenters. The efficacy of the procedure in the preparation of enantiomerically pure endocyclic enecarbamates was also demonstrated and compared to the commonly used Shono’s protocol, which in our hands led to partial racemization of the endocyclic enecarbamate 18c.

Noteworthy, the reaction of Pchirogenic silylphosphine-boranes with enones afforded the phospha-Michael adducts without racemization at the P-center. While the silylphosphine-boranes have been scarcely described so far, these compounds demonstrate their great interest for the synthesis of chiral and achiral functionalized organophosphorus compounds.

Controlling Reactivity by Geometry in Retro-Diels-Alder Reactions under Tension

Mechanical force, with its ability to distort, bend, and stretch chemical bonds, is unique in the way it activates chemical reactions. In polymer mechanochemistry, the force is transduced in a directional fashion, and the efficiency of activation depends on how well the force is transduced from the polymer to the scissile bond in the mechanophore (i.e., mechanochemical coupling). We have investigated the effects of regio- and stereochemistry on the rate of force-accelerated retro-Diels-Alder reactions of furan/maleimide adducts. Four adducts, presenting an endo or exo configuration and proximal or distal geometry, were activated in solution by ultrasound-generated elongational forces. A combination of structural (1H NMR) and computational (CoGEF) analyses allowed us to interrogate the mechanochemical activation of these adducts. We found that, unlike its thermal counterpart where the reactivity is dictated by the stereochemistry, the mechanical reactivity is mainly dependent on the regiochemistry. Remarkably, the thermally active distal-exo adduct becomes inert under tension due to poor mechanochemical coupling.
