Preparation of Amorphous Poly(aryl ether nitrile ketone) and Its Composites with Nano Hydroxyapatite for 3D Artificial Bone Printing

PEEK had been used to fabricate artificial bones by 3D printing widely, but it expressed unsatisfactory interlayer performance of 3D printing and weak compatibility with nano hydroxyapatite(nHA) due to the limits of molecular structures. Here an amorphous poly(aryl ether ketone) for 3D bone printing, PEK-CN, was designed and synthesized via nucleophilic substitution from 4,4′-difluorobenzophenone, phenolphthalein and 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile, which possessed much stronger interlayer strength due to van der Waals force between polar groups(-CNs). Specifically, the stronger interlayer strength resulted in lower porosity(3% with 100% infill rate) and more comparable mechanical properties(the maximum tensile strength was similar to 110 MPa) to cortical bone. Importantly, PEK-CN had passed in vitro cytotoxicity testing and samples of human mandible and maxillary bones based on PEKCN were printed by fused deposition modeling(FDM) successfully. Moreover, PEK-CN/nHA composites were obtained to enhance bioactivity of resin, and PEK-CN without limits of crystal lattices expressed excellent compatibility with nano hydroxyapatite. Our work provided a high performance resin for 3D bone printing, which would bring better solutions for artificial bone materials.

Design and research of non-contact triboelectric nanogenerator based on changing electrostatic field

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and its self-powered sensor based on the principles of contact electricity generation and electrostatic induction have important application prospects in the fields of new energy and internet of things (IoT). In the contact separation process of polymer materials with different electronegativity values, due to the transfer of electrons, a changing electrostatic field will be generated in the space around the polymer. In the existing TENG research, the field strength perpendicular to the plane of the friction layer and the electrode layer is mainly used to generate electrostatic induction, and the electric field effect around the polymer is ignored. According to the principle of electrostatic induction, the internal charge of the conductor in the electric field will be redistributed, which provides a way for the conductor to generate an induced electrical signal on the surface of the conductor without contacting the friction material. In this paper, we design a non-contact triboelectric nanogenerator (NC-TENG) based on changing electrostatic field. The influence of the distance between the conductor and the friction material, the induction area of the conductor and the position of the conductor relative to the friction material on the induced electrical output performance are studied when silicone rubber and nitrile rubber are used as a friction material. The results show that the NC-TENG can produce a stable electrical signal output when the conductor is completely separated from the friction material. The induced voltage of NC-TENG decreases with the increase of the distance between the conductor and the friction material, and gradually increases with the increase of the conductor’s induction area. For the friction material with a size of 30 mm x 30 mm, the electrical output of NC-TENG tends to be stable when its conductor area is 60 mm x 45 mm. In addition, the different orientation of the conductor relative to the friction material also has a significant effect on the induced electrical output. The NC-TENG designed in this paper provides a novel electrical output generation mode, which provides a higher possibility for the subsequent research on TENG and the application of self-powered sensors.

Can Medical-Grade Gloves Provide Protection after Repeated Disinfection?

The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has generated an increased consumption of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and masks, by healthcare workers and by the general public at a global scale. This has generated substantial shortage of these single-use and disposable PPEs that will end up as a landfill waste. Extending the life cycle of PPEs, such as gloves, by disinfecting treatments could help mitigate these concerns. However, the effect of various disinfection treatments on the functionality of gloves is unknown. In this study, six commonly used viral disinfection treatment methods (i.e., ultraviolet (UV) radiation, dry heat, steam, alcohol, chlorine compounds, and quaternary ammonium compounds) were evaluated for their effect on the performance attributes of two commonly used medical-grade gloves and nitrile and vinyl (latex) gloves. The barrier properties of both gloves against water and ethanol vapor flux were not affected up to 10 cycles of disinfection cycles. However, the increase in the disinfection cycle from 10 to 20 slightly reduced their barrier properties with minor variation in the type of disinfection and glove type. Infrared spectroscopy and microscopy investigations confirmed that both types of gloves could withstand up to 20 cycles of disinfection treatments with no observable change in the chemical structure and surface morphology of the disinfected surfaces, respectively. Lastly, tear property testing of the gloves indicated little to no change from the baseline after 20 cycles of treatment in both the nitrile and vinyl-based gloves. Overall, this study indicated that alcohol, UV, and heat treatment could be acceptable disinfection methods that allow the reuse of gloves up to 20 cycles. Such repeated disinfection of gloves not only reduces the strain on the supply of gloves but also decreases the postconsumer landfilled waste and environmental footprint of gloves.

Synthesis of Unsymmetrical 3,4-Diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones Utilizing Pyrrole Weinreb Amides

A regiocontrolled synthesis of unsymmetrical 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones has been achieved in three steps from 1,2-diaryl-1-nitroethenes with pyrrole-2-carboxamides (pyrrole Weinreb amides) serving as the key linchpin intermediates. Two different methods for the preparation of the requisite nitroalkenes were investigated: (1) modified Henry reaction between arylnitromethanes and arylimines; and (2) Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of 2-aryl-1-bromo-1-nitroethenes with arylboronic acids. Some difficulty was encountered in the preparation of arylnitromethanes, thus leading to the exploration of a cross-coupling strategy that proved more useful. A Barton-Zard pyrrole cyclocondensation reaction between 1,2-diaryl-1-nitroethenes and N-methoxy-N-methyl-2-isocyanoacetamide gave the corresponding pyrrole Weinreb amides, which were then converted into the desired 3-pyrrolin-2-ones in two steps. Overall, this method allowed for the construction of 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones with complete regiocontrol of the substituents with respect to the lactam carbonyl. The utility of this synthetic methodology was demonstrated by the preparation of eight unsymmetrical and symmetrical 3,4-diaryl-3-pyrrolin-2-ones including the N-H lactam analogue of the selective COX-II inhibitor, rofecoxib.

Bioprocessing optimization for efficient simultaneous removal of methylene blue and nickel by Gracilaria seaweed biomass

The pollution of water by heavy metal ions and dyes, particularly from industrial effluents, has become a global environmental issue. Therefore, the treatment of wastewater generated from different industrial wastes is essential to restore environmental quality. The efficiency of Gracilaria seaweed biomass as a sustainable biosorbent for simultaneous bioremoval of Ni2+ and methylene blue from aqueous solution was studied. Optimization of the biosorption process parameters was performed using face-centered central composite design (FCCCD). The highest bioremoval percentages of Ni2+ and methylene blue were 97.53% and 94.86%; respectively, obtained under optimum experimental conditions: 6 g/L Gracilaria biomass, initial pH 8, 20 mg/L of methylene blue, 150 mg/L of Ni2+ and 180 min of contact time. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra demonstrated the presence of methyl, alkynes, amide, phenolic, carbonyl, nitrile and phosphate groups which are important binding sites involved in Ni2+ and methylene blue biosorption process. SEM analysis reveals the appearance of shiny large particles and layers on the biosorbent surface after biosorption that are absent before the biosorption process. In conclusion, it is demonstrated that the Gracilaria seaweed biomass is a promising, biodegradable, ecofriendly, cost-effective and efficient biosorbent for simultaneous bioremoval of Ni2+ and methylene blue from wastewater effluents.
