Polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) are a class of microporous polymers with rigid and contorted molecular structures. The special structures lead to incomplete space occupation, and the pores of PIMs originate from the formed void. In this work, we made attempts to expand the applications of PIMs to the aspect of heavy metal removal. First, PIM-1 was synthesized using tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile (TFTPN) and 5,5′,6,6′-tetrahydroxy-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethyl-1,1′-spirobisindane (TTSBI) as precursors. The primary PIM-1 was quite hydrophobic, and thus could not be evenly dispersed in water, resulting in low adsorption capacity for mercury ions (Hg2+). A conversion of nitrile group in PIM-1 to thiol group was then carried out by two steps, namely carboxylation and introduction of thiol groups. The carboxylation made the polymers more active, and the final thiol-functionalization provided the polymers with hydrophilicity and affinity for Hg2+. The thiolethyl modified PIM-1 (assigned as PIM-G) and thiophenyl modified (assigned as PIM-B) possessed maximum Hg2+ adsorption capacity of 136 mg g(-1) and 127 mg g(-1) at pH 5, respectively. Besides, the thiol-functionalized PIMs had fluorescence property and showed potential in sensing for Hg2+.

According to the AM1, PM3, HF/6-31G(d,p), and MP2/6-31G(d,p)//HF/6-31G(d,p) calculations, it is the lactam tautomer of 2-pyrrolidone that is thermodynamically most stable in both the gas phase and an aqueous solution. Analysis of the PM3 data with consideration of the medium showed that the tautomeric equilibrium of 2-pyrrolidone (pyrroline-2-ol) in aqueous solution is shifted to the lactim form, which thus can be involved in complexation with palladium(II). 2-Pyrrolidone was found to be protonated at the O atom in both the gas phase and aqueous solution, in agreement with the concept of the mesomeric displacement of the electron density in the amide fragment. The aqueous medium stabilizes the lactim tautomer of 2-pyrrolidone more strongly than the lactam tautomer and the O-protonated cyclic amide than the N-protonated one. The stereoselectivity of complexation between palladium(II), chloride ion, and pyrroline-2-ol was explained. The initially formed tetragonal-pyramidal adduct with an axial organic ligand undergoes rearrangement into an intermediate with an extra axial Cl atom, which is a precursor of the cis-product. The thermodynamically less stable cis-isomer of the complex [PdCl2(pyrrolin-2-ol)(2)] is formed from the thermodynamically most favorable intermediate in associative nucleophilic substitution. At the supramolecular level, the cis-product can be stabilized by intermolecular dipole-dipole association in the crystal.

To bring our photochemical model of Pluto’s atmosphere and ionosphere (Krasnopolsky, 2020) into agreement with the recent detection of 5 x 10(15) cm(-2) methylacetylene C3H4 (Steffl et al., 2020), rate coefficients of the three key reactions of C3H4 production and loss have been changed to values calculated by (2019). This change reduces the abundance of cyanoacetylene HC3N close to the measured ALMA upper limit (Lellouch et al., 2017), increases the model abundances of H-2 and C3H8 by factors of 1.3, and reduces the abundances of H and C4H2 by factors of 1.3, while other species are changed less than 5% in the model. The predicted abundance of atomic hydrogen agrees with that derived from the observed Lyman-beta emission by Steffl et al. (2020). The observed (HCN)-N-14/(HCN)-N-15 > 125 on Pluto (Lellouch et al., 2017) looks puzzling compared to (HCN)-N-14/(HCN)-N-15 = 60 on Titan. Our analysis confirms the predissociation of N 2 at 80-100 nm as the main process of nitrogen isotope fractionation. The observed twofold difference is partially caused by the diffusive depletion of the heavy isotope in HCN and in the predissociation of N-2. On Pluto, the mean altitudes of HCN and predissociation of N-2 are 500 and 860 km, well above the homopause at 96 km. On Titan, observations of (HCN)-N-14/(HCN)-N-15 refer to 90-460 km (Vinatier et al., 2007), the predissociation occurs near 985 km, both below the homopause at 1000 km, and diffusive depletion does not occur. Therefore the observed limit corresponds to N-14/(15) N > 253 for N-2 in the lower atmosphere and N-14/N-15 > 228 in the upper layers of the N-2 ice. These limits reflect the conditions on Pluto in the last two million years, which is the lifetime of N-2 in Pluto’s atmosphere with the current N-2 loss of 37.5 g cm(-2) Byr(-1) primarily for photodestruction. The calculated isotope fractionation factor of 1.96 accounts for the formation and condensation of nitriles, diffusive separation, and fractionation in thermal escape. Variations of N-14/N-15 in the N-2 ice are related to the evolution of the solar EUV, mixing processes in the N-2 ice, and possible periods of hydrodynamic escape, which are poorly known and not considered here.

Road performance of liquid nitrile-butadiene rubber modified unsaturated polyester resin concrete

Unsaturated polyester resin concrete (UPC) is currently gaining attention in many fields due to its functional compressive capacity and corrosion resistance. However, the toughness of UPC is poor due to the weak resistance to the deformation of the cured unsaturated polyester resin (UP). In this paper, the UP was modified with liquid nitrile-butadiene rubber (LNBR) and further used to make concrete. At the same time, two different initiators were used to cure the UPC and LNBR modified UPC. To study the mechanism and road performance of LNBR modified UPC performance, optical microscopy test, Marshall test, water immersion Marshall test, rutting test, freeze-thaw split test, and infrared spectroscopy experiments were carried out. Test results showed that LNBR could effectively improve the low-temperature toughness of UPC. Although LNBR slightly reduced the Marshall stability and rutting resistance of UPC, it hardly changed the water stability of the UPC.
