Preparation and physical properties of intrinsic low-k polyarylene ether nitrile with enhanced thermo-stability

Polyarylene ether nitrile (PEN) random copolymers were prepared from 6AF, BHPF, and 2, 6-dichlorobenzonitrile according to the nucleophilic aromatic substitution polymerization. The chemical structure of PEN random copolymers was characterized by the FT-IR and H-1-NMR spectrum, respectively. The thermal properties of the PEN random copolymers were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The resulting PEN copolymers have excellent thermal stability with high glass transition temperature (T-g) ranging from 187? to 271? and the 5% weight loss temperature (T-5%) of PEN copolymers greater than 490? in nitrogen atmospheres. Meanwhile, the PEN films have excellent mechanical property, the tensile strength ranges from 55 to 95 MPa. Moreover, the dielectric properties of the PEN random copolymers were investigated by dielectric tests. The dielectric constants (k) and loss tangent (tan delta) of PEN (PEN-6-AF/BHPF100) film is only 2.3 and 0.03 at 1 kHz, respectively. More importantly, the dielectric properties were found to be relatively stable until the T-g, which can be attributed to the existence of BHPF units in the molecular backbone.

Peptides and proteins, evolved by nature to perform vital biological functions, would constitute ideal candidates for therapeutic intervention were it not for their generally poor pharmacokinetic profiles. Nonpeptide peptidomimetics have thus been pursued because they might overcome these limitations while maintaining both the potency and selectivity of the parent peptide or protein. Since the late 1980s, we have sought to design, synthesize, and evaluate a novel, proteolytically stable nonpeptide peptidomimetic scaffold consisting of a repeating structural unit amenable to iterative construction; a primary concern is maintaining both the appropriate peptide-like side-chains and requisite hydrogen bonding. In this Account, we detail how efforts in the Smith-Hirschmann laboratories culminated in the identification of the 3,5-linked polypyrrolinone scaffold. We developed effective synthetic protocols, both in solution and on solid supports, for iterative construction of diverse polypyrrolinones that present functionalized peptide-like side-chains. As a result of the rigid nature of the pyrrolinone scaffold, control over the backbone conformation could be exerted by modulation of the stereogenicity of the constituent monomers and the network of intramolecular hydrogen bonding. The extended conformation of the homochiral 3,5-linked polypyrrolinone scaffold proved to be an excellent mimic for beta-strands and beta-sheets. Application to enzyme inhibitor design and synthesis led not only to modest inhibitors of the aspartic acid protease renin and the matrix metalloprotease class of enzymes, but importantly to bioavailable HIV-1 protease inhibitors with subnanomolar binding constants. The design and synthesis of a competent peptide-pyrrolinone hybrid ligand for the class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) antigen protein HLA-DR1 further demonstrated the utility of the 3,5-polypyrrolinone motif as a mimic for the extended polyproline type II peptide backbone. Equally important, we sought to define, by synthesis, the additional conformational space accessible to the polypyrrolinone structural motif, with the ultimate goal of accessing pyrrolinone-based turn and helix mimetics. Toward this end, a mono-N-methylated bispyrrolinone was found to adopt an extended helical array in the solid state. Subsequent synthesis of D,L-alternating (heterochiral) tetrapyrrolinones both validated the expected turn conformations in solution and led to a functionally active mimetic of a peptidal beta-turn (similar to somatostatin). Finally, the design, synthesis, and structural evaluation of both acyclic and cyclic heterochiral (that is, D,L-alternating) hexapyrrolinones yielded nanotube-like assemblies in the solid state. Taken together, these results illustrate the remarkable potential of the 3,5-linked polypyrrolinone scaffold as beta-strand, beta-sheet, beta-turn, and potentially helical peptidomimetics.

Robust and recoverable dual cross-linking networks in pressure-sensitive adhesives

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) demand the ability to simultaneously improve toughness and adhesion. However, these requirements of PSAs have remained a great challenge because robust and recoverable characteristics are usually contradictory properties of PSAs. Dual cross-linking networks developed by incorporating dynamic noncovalent bonds into chemical cross-linking networks have the potential to mitigate these requirements in a wide variety of applications including adhesives, hydrogels, and elastomers. Herein, a facile approach to achieve dual cross-linking networks of acrylic PSAs with excellent mechanical properties and high-adhesive performance that integrate physically cross-linked networks into chemically cross-linked networks is proposed. Diurethane acrylic monomer-pentaerythritol ethoxylate (DAM-PEEL) groups were introduced into the acrylic PSA system through photopolymerization. The PSA/DAM-PEEL dual cross-linking networks led to the development of the chemically cross-linked networks for both PSA and DAM via covalent bonds and the physically cross-linked networks between the amide groups of DAM and the hydroxyl groups of PEEL via hydrogen bonds. Consequently, the PSA/DAM-PEEL dual cross-linking networks were able to simultaneously improve the modulus and stretchability. This design strategy for developing dual cross-linking networks of materials could offer potential applications for various adhesive-related applications.

The electrochemical response of the cation and the anion in 4a,b are independent from each other. [RuCl(N equivalent to CR)(5)](+) possesses one reversible Ru-II/Ru-III process. However, [RuCl4(N equivalent to CMe)(2)](-) was shown to be prone to ligand exchange and disproportionation upon formation of either a Ru-IV and Ru-II species at 25 degrees C, while at -72 degrees C the rapid conversion of the electrochemically formed species is hindered. In situ IR and UV/Vis/NIR studies confirmed the respective disproportionation reaction products of the aforementioned oxidation and reduction, respectively.
